Diana the Valkyrie's Newsletter - December 1998

A hard man is good to beat

December

December, of course, is the month that Christmas happens. And very little else, apart from the preparations for celebrating New Year's Day.

Free internet access for web site members

Yes, you can get free access to the internet. Actually, you can get free internet access whether you're a member of the web site or not, but if you're a member, you read the newsletter, and I tell you about it. Non members might not hear.

Here's the deal. If you're in the US, you go to NetZero and sign on. You get free internet access and email, saving you the $10/month that you're currently paying. Read what they have to say, and make up your own mind. It means you'll get to see more adverts, of course :-(

If you're in the UK, go to Dixons, and get their Freeserve CD Rom. You get free internet access, email and even 15 mb of web space. I signed up with Freeserve. See me at my Freeserve web site

If you have problems getting things set up with their CD Rom, I've got a ten-step explanation of what it does, so you can do it yourself by hand. Plus, if you do it this way, its installation won't change whatever defaults you have set up. It's not easy to do, but if you need to do it the hard way, it's all explained.

Here's another free internet provider for UK folk (but the adverts are more visible). And another (but they insert adverts into your email). And another. And another (with unlimited web space). And another. And another (unlimited web space which can be used for commercial purposes). And another (they support Frontpage).

I found only one free service in the US. If you find any others, let me know. There's others that claim to be free, but when you read what they really offer, there's a sign-up fee. There's nothing wrong with that, I'll be writing to the compilers of the Oxford English Dictionary, though, to tell them that the word "free" has acquired a new meaning. So with freewwweb you pay $99 one time, for the set-up.

My guess is that this is just the start of a trend. Once there's one free access company, it puts immense pressure on the others. And I think the reason for the large number of free providers in the UK, has to do with the way the telephone company charges, which is different from the US.

So what's the catch? Who's really paying who? In the UK, it works like this. Freeserve (or whoever) registers as a "Telephone company". They only offer the 0845 number (local call rate), and share the revenue from that with BT. So by using that number, you're cutting some of BT's profit, and giving that to Freeserve.

Because of the way it works, these free ISPs are likely to be as good in terms of connection, as the ones you pay for; the exception is support, where you can expect to pay separately. But the fact is, once you've got a connection working, you'll probably need no support.

New and updated Galleries

There's a plethora of Uncle SL artwork galleries; new ones and updated ones. And lots of stuff is still coming in from the 1998 WSE

The Library

We have a new author, P-Towne. He writes well, and about his huge, strong, muscular girlfriend. Some sex, not much violence. A new one from me, "Valkyrie at the North Pole", a story distinguished by its total lack of sex or violence, possibly the only such story on the web site.

The Movie Theatre

There's a new area; the Ladybumps looping clips

The files are sorted with the most recent at the top.

Censorship?

The threatened cloud has passed away,
And brightly shines the dawning day;
What though the night may come too soon,
We've years and years of afternoon!

The OCPA seems to be tied up in the courts; I guess this is all part of some ritual that I don't really understand.

Meanwhile, for entertainment purposes only, here's the list of words that AOL doesn't like. Please make sure that you don't use them on AOL, or even tell AOL members where they are.

Newsgroups - NewsThumbs

On December, we did the first stage in adding a couple of dozen new newsgroups to Newsthumbs, which was to switch on the flow from upstream. The greatly increased flow of news, was too much for the hamster, and it went insane running in its little treadmill. So we gave it an honourable burial, and put a much bigger hamster in place.

You probably don't want the gory details - it turned out to be tough to fix, and it took us two days before we got it all stabilised again. But you will notice an extra couple of dozen newsgroups are now available. And the total number of pictures in NewsThumbs, on the day I added the new NewsGroups, was 110,000, plus 139,000 on the main web site. That's a total of a quarter of a million pictures, in 11.7 gigabytes.

The next stage of this, will be to move my news server to Mary, where the extra space will mean I can add even more newsgroups, and keep pictures for longer.

The Shopping Mall

A new video from the Numero Uno Scissors Team of Heather Fine and Kandor. Heather looks lovely and lethal, Kandor simply looks crushed, as he endures scissoring after scissoring, until finally his poor battered body can take no more, and the last time he falls unconscious, Heather can't wake him up.

Go look in the Shopping Mall for this masterpiece of the scissors genre.

Predictions for 1999

From the Wise Old Valkyrie

It's traditional to make predictions about the coming year round about now. So here's a few:

The number of pictures on the web site will increase from the current 142,000; the number of new pictures each month will continue to be greater than the total number of pictures on most web sites.

The amount of video will increase too. Again, the amount of new video per month will continue to be greater than most sites have in total.

Lots more stories - people enjoy writing, and now it's easy to find an appreciative audience. And writing improves your writing skills, a useful job-skill.

Mary, my new news-server will come on line, with 128 gb of space. I'll keep news articles for longer, and add more newsgroups.

There will be more participation on the web site from FBBs and wrestlers, because they understand and appreciate fan power.

There will be a lot more fan-made web sites, celebrating various people (FBBs and wrestlers) and activities.

The Message Boards will continue to grow in numbers and popularity. And more new folk will try out, and like, the chatroom.

More and more people will choose ISPs that offer free connection.

As the year 2000 approaches, there will be mounting excitement and hysteria. I'm not nearly as worried about the "Millenium bug" as I am about religious nutcases expecting the Apocalypse.

The number of people on the internet will increase from some huge number to some bigger huge number. The number of web sites will mushroom, too. The number of *good* web sites will increase slightly.

The Clubhouse

I added Members profiles. What they are, is little web sites that members of the web site can use to give as much or as little information about themselves as they choose. I got the idea from AOL, of course, I was chatting with Jaye, and he said "Why don't you have profiles, like AOL does?"

Well, if AOL can do it, so can I. So I did. If you go to here you can create a profile of yourself. And you can read other members' profiles.

I also added Contributor of the Month, another voting thing. I've listed authors, artists and enhancers, and you can vote each month to say who you think has done the best stuff.

Go to to read about it. If you're not a member, then use username non-member password sesame, just as on the Message Boards.

Thanks to Mr C for the suggestion.

Elizabeth the CyberValkyrie

Some of you will have already met the CyberValkyrie. But she wouldn't talk to WebTV folk, some nonsense about needing Javascript. So now, there's another way that you can have a session with Elizabeth, which works for WebTV folk too.

In the Chatroom

I asked Clepsy to keep a count of people's chatroom posts, and to display it on the Message Board page. Now, every time you load that page, the latest chat stats are given (at the bottom) and who's currently in the chatroom (at the top).

Sadly, near the end of December, the Grinch ate the top several posters. But the figures were somewhat inaccurate anyway; I'll start the count again.

On December 5th, there was over half a megabyte of chat, with a peak number of 20 people in the chatroom (including Clepsy). Half a megabyte in one day, all typed in by people with something to say! Amazing.

I also created another chatroom, so now there's two places to go (the Tea Room and Poets' Corner) to get away from the main chatroom. And I told Clepsy to page people each time a PM is sent to them, because otherwise, you don't know a PM is waiting for you until you use the room to send something. Plus to say who it was from.

This certainly put the cat amongst the pigeons! Jabber was very anti the idea, and you can see the discussions on ShyGuy's Message Board. But it brought home to people how whenever an FBB enters the room, she gets hit by a barrage of PMs, and can't type the answers fast enough, and the general chat just dies. Hopefully, by revealing the issue, it will get better.

You can read CaptainCorc's statistical summary and find out who made how many posts, who said the most, and so on.

Here's Warrior Poet's report of December in the Chatroom

December Notes

by Warrior Poet

Hello, Everyone!

This month we have a changing of the guard. It seems that in the previous months our good friend, CaptainCorc went out and found himself a Valkyrie to call his own (or, rather, a Valkyrie to call him hers). Diana the Valkyrie, in her limitless wisdom, has realized that I am the least likely to go out and find myself a life so she has assigned me the very important task of writing the monthly "In the Chatroom" report.

December seemed considerably wilder that usual, with all the comings and goings. The holidays have brought with them a spirit of excited anticipation for what Diana will put in our stockings (by the way, Diana, I prefer musclebound blonde Valkyries).

We made three new friends this month. MadScientist, the muscular biologist from Long Island, Dennis the friendly Ukrainian, and oriole98, the 25 year old law student. Welcome aboard, guys!

Our English friend of many names (Higgs Bosun, Captain Pugwash, Captain Mouthwash, All's Quiet on the Western Front, etc.) but widely known as Shy Guy entertained three of our good European chatroom friends. Sen of Germany made his way to Shy Guy's apartment for a short while and King and Jana of Slovenia managed to stop by, as well, and even found the time to put in a hard workout with Shy Guy and Andrulla Blanchette, the Iron Goddess. During this time, King also managed to learn the gentle art of HTML and seemed to become intoxicated with it's power. It was alo during this month that I inadvertantly incapacitated Diana's chatroom with my HTML. My apologies to any who may have been inconvenienced.

Speaking of guys with funky accents, our Australian friend, Aussie managed to survive a session with the massive and incredibly powerful Christine Envall of the same nation. I fear, however, that she may have broken some of his bones, though he is to euphoric to notice that just yet. And Alexei is presently arranging plans to meet the mighty Nicole Bass when she is next able to travel to England. Get your personal affairs in order, my friend. You may not survive. Brownie and Iare working on a plan to lure the lovely Ms. Sheila Burgess to the sleepy little town of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

While Andrulla was touring the states, she found time to get together with PJ, the female bodybuilding scholar. They stopped by a cyber cafe (that's progress for ya!) and logged on at the same time. Now we are all quite envious of PJ for having met Andrulla, but we'll get him back, somehow.

Scooby has managed to locate the Holy Grail of fem fighting films. "Virgin of the Seven Seas" has been located and will undoubtedly be found on his next Volume.

Richard, the California biker, seemed doomed to work the late hours at the hospital and lacking any emergencies, manned the chatroom late shift exceptionally well. Should you ever want someone to talk to at 3am, just log on and wait. Richard will probably find you.

FistMan was given his own message board that will focus on pictures that posters will write links to. He is also running a contest on his board. If you have any personal pics that are relevant to the website, please contact him.

HardbodyPaul managed to pack on 6 lbs of muscle and may soon be seen at the Arnold Classic, either as a competitor or a fan. Jaxx has decided to take up bodybuilding despite the obvious fact that he won't be so easy for Valkyries to defeat. Damned if you do and damned if you don't. The best of luck to you, my friend.

Slowdive found a new lady friend to kick his ass and hopefully we will see pictures of the action on the internet, soon. A personal request, Slowdive, please wear pants next time.

Phew! That was a fast month with a lot of fun chat! It seems that with every month we make many new friends in the Coffee Lounge, but no one ever leaves. I hope that I can keep up on the conversation or I may need help writing the newsletter each month.

To those of you who have not yet tried Diana's chatroom, I STRONGLY recommend that you do so now! I have been a member since early 1997, but I never really gave the chatroom much of a chance until May 1998. It's been a blast everyday, and I honestly can't remember what my life was like before I came here. There are an awful lot of us who admire strong women out there who have no one to share our thoughts with. Having been in that hard situation for nearly 14 years I know how terribly lonely it can be. But it doesn't have to be so. There are several dozen people who regularly frequent this chatroom and talk all day long about strong women. There is a definate kinship felt in the Coffee Lounge and many of us have made lifelong friends there. You don't know what you are missing, but if you give it a try, I promise you love it.

'Till next month, if I make it that long!

On the Message Boards

There's four new Message Boards; one about Session deposits, which is also about other routes to lower-cost sessions. Another new Message Board is about bodybuilding and supplements, and the other is WWwilddude's Celebrity Muscle and Flexing. And Joanna Needham (see her new Gallery) is also hostessing a new Message Board.

Other news from the Message Boards

The "Board of the month" and the "Poster of the month" was very popular, people like to know which board is hottest, and who's posting the most. So I told Mavis (she runs the Message Moards) to keep a running tally of these, and you can see the top ten Message Boards and the top ten posters, on the Message Board page.

Mavis keeps that completely up-to-date; any time a member posts, those top ten figures are redone.

Mavis keeps a running total of who are the most frequent posters, and which message boards are most used. This figure is reset to zero each month, and you can see past figures in the web site newsletter.

She only keeps tabs on members. Non-members posts are also welcomed, of course, but since Mavis doesn't know who is posting, she can't include them in the tally.

First of all, the answers to last month's quiz. The First Aid question - hold it under a cold tap until it goes down, then put liniment on it and scream. The screaming is optional, but most people seem to do it. The Food question - the answer is "sausages" and not the revolting suggestion made by Mr Cordwangler. And the "What's happening in this picture" question - first of all let me say that many of the answers are probably not possible, and some of them are probably illegal. In fact it was a dance called the "frug".

I checked the site statistics. that Sandra counts up each night. At the end of December 1998, there were about 142,000 pictures (5.9 gigabytes), 6.5 gigabytes of video, 2700 text files (mostly stories) and a total of about thirteen gigabytes. That's not including NewsThumbs, which is another 103,000 pictures and 209,000 text files, a total of six gigabytes.
