Duel In The Forest. Part 1.

In a secret, underground laboratory, mad scientist Daphne Delmar, an escaped fugitive from the State Mental  Institution, made an astonishing discovery, an enzyme formula that changed the body's chemistry to produce super powers. After briefly studying the drug's effects on experimental lab animals, the madwoman rashly injected herself with the drug. Against all odds, the experiment not only did not kill Daphne, but actually had the desired result. After a number of tests, she confirmed that she was indeed invulnerable to injury and incredibly stronger than any normal human. She could even fly through the air, with birdlike agility.

"Hah! Bet I'm even stronger than that bitch, Comet Lady, the President of the Superheroine Council!  Let them try to put me back in that nut house, NOW!" The unstable, new superwoman sneered. "In fact, it's time I paid back a few  people who put me there in the first place!  Yeah, like that bitch Wendy Van Heller, the Publisher of the Daily Chronicle! It was her who published that series of articles claiming my experiments were dangerous and 'life threatening'! Then she got her pal Comet Lady to capture me! And she testified at my trial that I was crazy! We'll see who's crazy?  Both those bitches deserve a little payback! Comet Lady's the most dangerous though, so her first!"

"Hmm! I'll need a costume and a name, just like those goody-goody, Superheroine Council bitches!
I'm gonna hunt my enemies, so maybe I should call myself 'Night Hunter'? Yeah that has a nice ominous ring to it!"

Once she chose a name fitting her nefarious schemes, Daphne swiftly assembled an improvised costume.  She picked out a tight, gray body suit, matched it with high black boots, and topped off the ensemble with a black mesh head mask.

Next day, in a luxurious penthouse office, high atop the Chronicle Tower, Publisher Wendy Van Heller  reviewed her morning mail. "Hmph! This letter is obviously from some crank!" The newspaperwoman concluded at first glance, but as she read on though the rambling missive she had second thoughts. "This is signed by someone calling herself  'Night Hunter', but it reminds me of those nutty letters, I used to get from that Daphne Delmar woman, when we were doing those articles on her! She escaped from the asylum a few months ago, too! Ha, ha! this is rich!  Night Hunter challenges Comet Lady to a duel! That sure sounds like Daphne! She had real delusions of grandeur! No one in their right mind would want to face Comet Lady in a fight! She wants Comet Lady to meet her, this afternoon, at 4:00 P.M. in a secluded clearing in the Forest Preserve north of town! No spectators! Just a video camera to record the 'Historic Event', as she calls it!"

Wendy pondered the letter a few moments longer, thinking: "Well, I guess the best thing to do, is to arrange for Comet Lady to meet this nut, alone like she asks! If it is Daphne, Comet Lady can take her back to the Asylum for more treatment! If it's a hoax, the fewer people involved the better! Comet Lady always handles these things pretty well on her own!"

Wendy was well aware that Comet Lady was President of the Superheroine Council for good reason. Not only did her incredible Comet powers make her the most formidable superhero in the World, she was also the most dedicated and altruistic of costumed crimefighters! At sixteen, a beautiful young girl was exposed to the full radiation of a giant comet crashing into the Earth.  The massive radiation made the young woman into a super being of irresistible force, but the explosion killed her mother and father. In sorrowful memory of her parents, the girl adopted the secret identity of Comet Lady, and vowed to dedicate her life to using her enormous powers for the good of humanity.

Shortly before 4:00 P.M. a gaily uniformed figure flew northward from the great City!
"Well we'll see if this is Daphne, or some other unfortunate! Either way, I'll see she gets the help she needs!" Comet Lady mused as she flew toward the appointed rendezvous. "I have to be back the City to preside at the Superheroine Council weekly meeting this evening, but this shouldn't take very long!" The superheroine confidently told herself.

Comet Lady reached the appointed meeting place at exactly 4:00 P. M.! Supremely confident in her powers she disdained stealth, and boldly landed in the center of the forest clearing. She did not see the dark figure concealed in an overhead branch, eagerly waiting for her.

As Comet Lady's booted toes touched ground, the woman calling herself Night Hunter struck from behind, with astonishing force, such force as Comet Lady never before encountered.

Though, startled by the incredible power of the cowardly attack from the rear, Comet Lady was not fazed.  She whirled around angrily, and struck back at her attacker. In her anger she held back  nothing of her awesome power.

Having thrown her hardest punches, Comet Lady was astonished to discover her new enemy seemed to possess an invulnerability that might equal her own Comet powers. Through her mask the woman was sneeringly grinning back at her.  Comet Lady was sobered by the realization she was in for an unprecedented challenge to her powers, perhaps the greatest challenge of her career.

Confronted by an enemy who might nearly equal her own phenomenal strength for the first time, Comet Lady resolutely raised her fists, but made careless by long invulnerability, she fell victim to a sneaky kick to her crotch.

Comet Lady clutched her belly in pain, and gagged from the effects of the cowardly low kick. Night Hunter didn't squander the edge she'd gained by her foul tactics. Her fists hammering with the force of a pair of pile drivers, she attacked like a whirlwind.  Comet Lady staggered back from Night Hunter's overpowering assault.

Comet Lady made the painful discovery that the merciless  power of Night Hunter's rocky fists hurt and injured her as no foe ever had.

Night Hunter's  deadly attack was devastating.  Head spinning, arms dangling leadenly, Comet Lady stumbled groggily, almost falling. Profiting form her foe's distress, Night Hunter unleashed a lethal karate attack, and Comet Lady discovered, to her sorrow, that when backed by super powers, feet are even more deadly than fists.

Night Hunter's deadly kicks came close to knocking Comet Lady off her feet. She staggered unsteadily, eyes glazed, panting for breath. She couldn't even raise her arms to defend herself.

Seeing the Mighty Comet Lady in such dire straits, Night Hunter grew even bolder.  She leaped at the befuddled superheroine and seized her around the waist. As the villainess's arms closed on her middle, Comet Lady felt she was trapped in a giant vise.

Comet Lady wriggled and squirmed helplessly, unable to escape the steely trap Night Hunter had sprung. A lesser woman might have surrendered to terror as those bear trap arms crushed her midsection with merciless power. As it was, the invincible superheroine was learning to fear a foe for the first time in her career. She struggled to get loose with panicky desperation.
