It's still summer, but not as much as last month. The conker trees are heavy-laden, and there's a bit of a chill in the air in the evening.

Working normally
My internet access on the ship worked fine, except when we were in the middle of the North Sea and out of range of a mobile phone network, even using my 8-element Yagi antenna.
And, of course, that was the day that Nadia chose to go down, after two months of non-stop working. So, there was a period of about 24 hours while most of the web site was out of action.
When we got to Copenhagen, I got phone signal, and was able to log in and see the problem. So I switched the load from Nadia to Norah, the backup for this, and everything worked fine.
The main thing was, I didn't spend the whole week worrying about the possibility of some major fixable problem that I couldn't fix because I didn't know about it, and I was able to keep up with most of my email. I couldn't put up stuff people sent me, because I didn't have the facilities to process it, but I could answer "What's my password" questions and the like. And for other questions, at least I was able to give a partial answer and a promise of a full answer when I got back. This is working well, then, and I'll be using it again later this year (I'm planning a week to the Mediterranean Sea in October).2
September 21 - a rather unusual event. I work mostly from my studio (you can see the view out to my garden), and in the late afternoon, I pull my rollerblinds down partially, because otherwise the late sun blinds me. So it was at about 5 pm, when there was a sudden bang on the wondow. I looked up, and saw a spray of feathers, and a pigeon flittering and fluttering to get itself stabilised. The daft bird had just flown at my window, even though the glass had the opaque blind pulled down behind it. I can't imagine how it could have made that mistake, I hope it recovers from the collision. I saw it fly away, apparently unscathed, but it must have been painful for it.
September 26; Laura went down. Laura carries Herbiceps and several other sites. A reboot brought it back up again, but after a few minutes, it was down again. That sounds like a CPU fan problem, and I can't fix it until I get the computer back.
So I set up one of the spare servers to take that load, restored the backup that I keep just in case, and now Wanda carries Herbiceps and those sites.
I just had a look ay the web site I go to for hard drives. Prices are down below £80 - I constantly get astonished by the falling prices of hardware.
Nothing new.
I don't make these up, although the comments on the spams are mine, of course. These are actual spams sent to me, which just strike me as funny. I don't include their contact details - go find your own spammers!
By the way, if you're using StoneColdMail (which is free to web site members) then you won't see most of these spams, they'll be delivered into your "Spam" folder.
No-one likes spam, but murdering a spammer is going too far.

Most of the sponsorships now are by giving women server space and bandwidth, so they can operate their web sites without having to pay these fees. There's also photoshoots, which gets some revenue into their hands, as well as the traditional direct-funding sponsorship.
I agreed to be the major sponsor of the Valkyrie Festival in Vancouver, in September this year.

There's been a major discussion on my board, about the message board software. Once again, we're talking about the idea of changing to a different software package, possibly to YaBB (that's the package I put on Herbiceps and other sites). But I've also been changing the existing software to accomodate many of the things that people say they want.
Look here to see a new style of board, with threads, and multiple posts on the same page, and the ability to handle as many inline links as you want to have. The old style of viewing the boards will still be available when that version of the software starts to be used.

I checked the site statistics that Sandra counts up each night.
At the end of September 2005, there were about 785,000 pictures (53 gigabytes), 164 gigabytes of video, 9700 text files (mostly stories) and a total of about 218 gigabytes. There's over 140 million pictures altogether in Newsthumbs.
