Garden cam # 2. Now I've got four cams pointed at the garden, which has pushed past the daffodil stage and is now a riot of bluebells.

Running smoothly.
In April, we launched the DtV Broadcasting System. I finished writing the software, and I sent out 50 webcams. Those are now being installed at various places.
The idea is this - video chat. The cams are set up at various sites; suitable women offer shows. A show will be partly interactive chat, and partly performance. The big difference between this cam system and most others, is the cost. We're starting at 10 cents per minute, 25c for active chatting.
How can we get the price so low, when other webcam systems cost $3 or $4 per minute? The answer is technology and tips. First off, the technology for all this has been developed at Valkyrie Towers, so we didn't need to buy in an expensive software system. But more importantly, because the technology was developed here, we were able to make it do exactly what we want.
The big problem with a webcam, is bandwidth. A typical DSL will be 250/500, meaning 250 kilobits of upload. If a cam picture is 8kb, then that means just three frames per second. But if you have six people trying to get data from that cam, then each of them will only get one frame every two seconds. And that's not video, that's a succession of stills. Even three frames per second is very jerky.
So what I'm doing, is pulling the pictures from the cam to my server, and then my server offers them to as many people as want to watch, and my server has 100 megabits of bandwidth. This means that a lot of people can enjoy the show at the same time, and that shares the cost.
At this point, you're probably wondering what it looks like. Well, I have a demo you can see, the Windmill. Username guest, password guest. That will give you some idea of what the quality of the system is.
One example of how, by developing it in-house, we got more than you get from store-bought software, is the tipping system. You can tip the performer, and we're hoping that this will help make up for the low per-minute rate.
Another example, is snapshots. You can, while logged on, take a snapshot of the performer, and you can collect and keep these snapshots, and show them to other people.
A third example, is the archives. Each performance will be archived, and after a few weeks, the archive will become accessible to you, at an even lower cost.
You know those scam emails that tell you that the sender has $18,600,000 in a frozen account and just needs your co-operation ... we call this the advance fee fraud, because at some point in the proceedings, you have to send a really small amount of money (perhaps just a few thousand) to clear some minor obstacle. And of course, once you've sent that, you'll never see it again.
There's nothing new under the sun, they say. I used to get these as letters, a while ago. But imagine my surprise, when I got an advance-fee-fraud letter through the post recently!
About 60 web cams ...
I don't make these up, although the comments on the spams are mine, of course. These are actual spams sent to me, which just strike me as funny. I don't include their contact details - go find your own spammers!
By the way, if you're using StoneColdMail
(which is free to web site members) then you won't see most of these spams, they'll be delivered
into your "Spam" folder.

Where do we send the $300,000?
Same place you sent the last $300,000
Millions oVaf AmerTr%ican35s already re-financxted!
You're mumbling again.
We've sponsored lots of the women; Nicole Bass, Andrulla Blanchette, Sheila Burgess, Christine Envall, Marilyn Perret, Peggy Schoolcraft, Larisa Hakobyan, Steph Parks.
We're also sponsoring individual events such as the Femsport Valkyrie Festival, and the New York Muscle Club, and funding athletes to go to events with grant dollars.
We're also doing free hosting and free bandwidth for many of our sponsored women. Bandwidth can mount up to a large bill when you're running a popular web site.
And we've sponsored Heather Foster, Kara Bohigian, Priscilla Ribic, KerryAnn Allen, Linda Cusmano and Jodi Miller. Also Anita Ramsey and Rhonda Dethlefs.

Tre soars like an eagle, despite his well-publicised trip to Sweden - something to do with the Swedish women's netball team, I think.

It's all about FBBs, movies and mixed action. | The Grinch didn't get the stats! |
I checked the site statistics that Sandra counts up each night.
At the end of April 2005, there were about 746,000 pictures (49 gigabytes), 159 gigabytes of video, 9100 text files (mostly stories) and a total of about 209 gigabytes. There's over 140 million pictures altogether in Newsthumbs.
