A hard man is good to beat

February, 2004

It was cold, very cold. Clear skies mean good astronomy, but bitterly cold nights. I think I'll wait till it warms up a bit. Still, the crocuses are out, that's a good sign.

The Server Farm

I did a comb through the servers (about half my servers are backup servers, so don't get used much). I found about half a dozen faulty drives, and replaced them. Also various other minor faults; one cooling fan wasn't cooling enough, so I replaced it with a beefier one.

I also fixed a UPS that wasn't working; it was a problem with the batteries, so I ordered new batteries and put them in - as you'd guess, it wasn't exactly difficult. Most of my UPSes are 3000 KVA, which are big, heavy and work great. I've just ordered a 5000 KVA unit, which I'm expecting to weigh over 100 pounds.

Understanding the internet

Cameras

I bought a DVD player that can handle any region. This means that I can now do captures from DVDs, which is important because one of my contributors is sending stuff in that way. Having tried it, I like it a lot, it's a lot more convenient than tape.

Spams of the Month

I don't make these up. These are actual spams sent to me, which just strike me as funny. I don't include their contact details - go find your own spammers!

You were resfersred to me as a person seeking finsancsial indepsendesnce.

Virus of the month

Nothing special - I got an assortment in my email, but I don't know which ones they are.

Sponsorships

We've sponsored lots of the women; Nicole Bass, Andrulla Blanchette, Sheila Burgess, Christine Envall, Marilyn Perret, Peggy Schoolcraft, Larisa Hakobyan, Steph Parks.

We're also sponsoring individual events such as the Femsport Valkyrie Festival, and the New York Muscle Club, and funding athletes to go to events with grant dollars.

We're also doing free hosting and free bandwidth for many of our sponsored women. Bandwidth can mount up to a large bill when you're running a popular web site.

And we've sponsored Heather Foster, Kara Bohigian, Priscilla Ribic, KerryAnn Allen, Linda Cusmano and Jodi Miller. Anita Ramsey and Rhonda Dethlefs coming up.

New web sites

You'll have noticed that I've been involved in putting up loads of other web sites (if you didn't notice, then I wasn't shouting loud enough). This has now become such a common ocurrence, I think I'll cover it in this newsletter.

The latest is Zoa Linsey

The Clubhouse

In the Chatroom

The big news is the Return of CaptainCorc. After a couple of years absence from the site, he's returned, bringing bits of G&S and his funny hats.

And Madman soars far into the lead.

On the Message Boards

I've stopped moving posts from the Guest board to the main boards. Every time anyone posts as "guest", the server tells them they should register. If people can't be bothered to register, then they'll just have to accept using the guest board.

This month we had 4437 posts to the boards.

Some excellent discussions on the Politics board, also on the FBB board. Hmm, looks like I've been spending too much time on the Politics and Religion message boards.

Board access

Mavis is counting the number of times the message list is checked for each board. This gives a very different picture from the one above.

TomNine leaps back into the lead. The Grinch got the stats.

A slip in half time costs $7.5 million

I checked the site statistics that Sandra counts up each night.

At the end of February 2004, there were about 680,000 pictures (42 gigabytes), 129 gigabytes of video, 8100 text files (mostly stories) and a total of about 172 gigabytes. The Current Newsthumbs has 7 1/2 million pictures; there's about 76 million pictures altogether in Newsthumbs.
