Vel'ana is the name of the language spoken by what Terrans know as the Homo Supremis: the I'mi'yena and the Ae'po. Below is a table listing certain terms familiar to readers in Terran English (in the dialect of the United States of America, circa 2000 A.D, Gregorian calendar), to help them understand just what these terms mean.
In Vel'ana, typically the second syllable is emphasized.
| Vel'ana | Definition | AURG Equivalent* |
|---|---|---|
| Vel'yena | A planet several hundred light-years from Earth. Home of the I'mi'yen. Their passive policies of interacting with other planetary governments mean that their government administers approximately seventy planets, most of them colonies of Vel'yena. | Velor |
| I'mi'yena | A citizen of the Vel'yena government. As with all other names suffixed with "yena", a suffix of "yen" indicates more than one. (Curiously, the home planet has the plural name.) | Velorian |
| Fa'va'yena | A minister in the Vel'yena government. | |
| Ba'te'yena | A teacher employed by the Vel'yena government. Specifically, those who service the academies on Da'x'yena. | |
| Sa'ra'yena | A particularly powerful I'mi'yena, genetically engineered from birth with near-Galen powers. Includes laser energies of variable frequencies released from the optical organs, additional reserve storage of etheric energy, the ability to transmit small amounts of and to receive radio signals, and increased strength above and beyond that of a Vi'ra'yena. Female. | Sa'ray'en |
| Vi'ra'yena | An enhanced D'zar'yena, partially from genetic advantages over other I'mi'yena and partially from intensive conditioning. Possesses greater strength and significantly increased endurance, primarily through training. Training includes a special focus on the arts of war, leadership, and diplomacy. Typically you may find these assigned as ambassadors plenipotentiary over regions of space, representing Vel'yena interests. Female. | Virago |
| D'zar'yena | An I'mi'yena serving as a diplomatic officer of the Vel'yena government in locations beyond Vel'yena space. In the absence of a Vi'ra'yena, they assume ambassadorial duties on a pro tem basis. As diplomats, they are required by their government's mandate to render assistance to the planets and territories they are assigned to. This includes interventions against the T'pri'lo and the Ka'li'lo. Female. | Protector |
| Au'zar'yena | An I'mi'yena serving as an intelligence officer of the Vel'yena government in locations beyond Vel'yena space. They are technically in the service of both the local Vi'ra'yena ambassador and their own Au'zar intelligence service, though they are trained to serve the latter far more than the former. Au'zar'yen are prohibited from directly intervening in the affairs of the planet they are assigned to, or otherwise assuming the duties of a D'zar'yena or Vi'ra'yena. Au'zar'yen are generally not well liked by the D'zar'yen because of their non-involvement policies, but the Vi'ra'yen have generally come to appreciate their often very timely supplies of information regarding the local populace. The Au'zar'yen also keep records on their fellow I'mi'yena operating outside Vel'yena space, a facet of their missions which the Vi'ra'yen and the Vel'yena government have accepted as a necessary evil to prevent corruption and damage to their public image. Female. | Scribe |
| O'tar'yena | An I'mi'yena serving as a special courier of the Vel'yena government in locations beyond Vel'yena space. They report directly to and are subservient to the local Vel'yena ambassador. In effect, they are the "postal service". Their exorbitant fees are usually covered by government contract, although recent labor disputes have led to significant reductions in service. Generally, O'tar'yen are male, as they are constantly traveling between planets, rarely spending more than a few days on any given planet. Their phonetic memory allows them to carry dictated messages for the Vel'yena government. | Messenger |
| Da'x'yena | A sister planet to Vel'yena, smaller in mass but slightly higher in gravity. Home of the various training academies of the Sa'ray'en, Vi'ra'yen (except for the Ne'Trona Vi'ra'yen), D'zar'yena, Au'zar'yena, and O'tar'yena. It is the home of the Vel'yena Ministry of State and Defense, the largest government agency of the Vel'yena. (Footnote: Recent debate in the Vel'yena government suggests the Ministry itself is under scrutiny for recent strategic defeats against the Ari'tan'lo.) | Dax'xan |
| K'ya'yena | A citizen of a planet belonging to a government for which a Vel'yena ambassador is present. In planets which do not yet have a unified government, the term K'ya'yena applies to the general populace. | Humans |
| A'ri'lo | A planet several hundred light-years from Earth, passing through the Uhlmann Nebula approximately every 6.3 Terra Gregorian years. Seat of government for the Q're Ari'lo. | Aria |
| Q're A'ri'lo | The formal name for the Ari'lo Empire. It spans several hundred planets, most under benevolent military dictatorships. In many cases, the dictatorships are little more than formalities, allowing the local planetary governments to administer the planets under their review. It is often hostile to the Vel'yena government, but has not had an actual state of war against Vel'yena for several Terra Gregorian centuries. At any given time, the Tom'po are engaged in approximately six conflicts to subdue rebellions and impose Q're Ari'lo government on desired planets. (Of those six, typically only one involves violence.) | Arion Empire |
| Ae'po | A citizen of the Q're A'ri'lo. All citizens, except those accepted to service among the T'pri'lo or the Zet'lo, upon reaching adulthood are required to serve in the Q're A'ri'lo military for a period of not less than two A'ri'lo years (approximately 1.8 Terra Gregorian years). | Arion |
| Zet'lo | A particularly powerful Ae'po, genetically engineered from birth with near-Galen powers. Includes laser energies of variable frequencies released from the optical organs, additional reserve storage of etheric energy, the ability to transmit small amounts of and to receive radio signals, and significantly increased strength above and beyond that of a T'pri'lo. Female. | T'set'lar |
| T'pri'lo | An intelligence officer of the Q're A'ri'lo, assigned to promote A'ri'lo interests in a particular planet's culture or a region of space. They go through a special training program which, combined with their natural genetics, gives them significant advantages in strength, endurance, and energy storage, among other things. | Prime |
| Ka'li'lo | A military officer of the Q're A'ri'lo. Rank titles include:
Higher ranks in the Q're A'ri'lo are typically administrative positions. The Ka'li'lo and the T'pri'lo are often at odds with each other, with the T'pri'lo often forcing the Ka'li'lo to obey their orders through their vastly superior capabilities. However, technically the T'pri'lo are at the service of the Ka'li'lo. On occasion, T'pri'lo may be physically removed from their office by a Ka'li'lo administrator, though such actions often have very violent but delayed consequences for the administrator in question and his aides. |
Betan |
| A'nan'lo | A citizen of a planet belonging to a government other than the A'ri'lo. | Humans |
| Ar'mah | A very strong but light metal alloy, used to provide services to Vel'yena and A'ri'lo away from their home planet who find normal metals too weak for their natural strength. It has a very high content of Element 43, known to Terrans as technetium. | Vendorian steel |
| Fe'lh | A fabled race of large feline sentient beings. According to the legends, they have strength comparable to a T'pri'lo or a D'zar'yena, but are notoriously hostile and unscrupled (even by A'ri'lo standards) in their use of that strength. Neither the Vel'yena government nor the A'ri'lo have found any evidence to indicate the Fe'lh exist or ever have, and they are largely discounted as rumor or fairy tale. | K'zin'thi |
| Ne'trona | A black hole near the center of the Milky Way Galaxy (but not the one at the center) believed to be holding a large population of Galen captive by its immense gravity. A special agency of the Vi'ra'yena has adopted the name, using the black hole as a training ground for potential Vi'ra'yena who do not qualify for that status through the normal means. The agency itself is very selective about who it admits as its members; Ne'trona Vi'ra'yena are considered "the best of the best", and are usually exempt by custom from Vel'yena law. Their training conditions them to perform above and beyond the requirements of service to the Vel'yena government. The A'ri'lo have not successfully infiltrated the Ne'trona training grounds, but at least 400 Ae'po (including 70 T'pri'lo) have been known to die in the training program. Of the legitimate Ne'Trona Vi'ra'yena candidates, approximately 12% complete the program, 85% of them drop out, and 3% of them die in training. Many drop-outs requalify as D'zar'yena, unless Vel'yena law prohibits them from doing so (usually by their violation of Vel'yena law). | |
| Galen / Diaboli | Two factions of an advanced Homo Ultimatus species from the very distant future. The Galen founded the Vel'yena. The Diaboli founded the A'ri'lo almost simultaneously. The reasons for these two factions founding the two societies are not entirely clear, but it is known that the two factions are at war with each other. Historical records show the two factions disappeared approximately 120 Terra Gregorian years after the societies were founded. The records do not explain why they disappeared. Specifics about the Homo Ultimatus and their capabilities are largely unknown, but they are known to be at least equivalent to the Sa'ra'yena and the Zet'lo. | Galen |
