The system was of no further interest. The probe constructed a microwave relay station on one of the systems airless moonlets and a series of observatories, both radio and optical. The probe used the observatories to determine which of several nearby systems it would investigate next. One system was deemed by the probe AI to be the best candidate. Based on the solar type, and that it had several large planetary bodies the system could bear life. The observatories functions fulfilled, the probe sent the signal that would cause the observatories to dissemble. The same nanites that had constructed them, would reduce them to dust. The microwave relay station was of sufficient size and power to beam the probes data dump to the system it had been launched from. The signal would travel more than 300 light years before it reached the home system. Included in the signal was the location of the system the probe had decided to investigate next. After the beacon signal was sent for a period of time, and the data dump repeated multiple times, the relay station would be used to monitor the stellar sphere for radio emissions of an artificial nature. If the station detected signals that were deemed interesting it would beam a copy of the emission and a report to the home system. In addition the station could be used as a relay by the probe. The relay station's AI not as sophisticated as the probes AI, but of sufficient capability to accomplish its tasks. It could maintain itself indefinitely, using the materials on the planetoid and the powerful tool of nanotechnology. In the remote possibility of discovery by another space faring race the station would self destruct, leaving no sign of its presence. After collecting materials to be used for fueling it's massive engines from the debris of this solar system the probe set course on its journey. It would reach a maximum velocity of 20 percent of light speed. The system it was headed toward was a mere thirty light years away. The probe AI shut down its higher functions for the majority of the journey, only leaving it's sensor systems on alert. ................. If a AI could be gleeful, this one was. For years it had been monitoring increasing radio emissions from one of the planets of the system it approached. The probe altered trajectory to monitor the third planet from a safe distance. The signals it picked up indicated the civilization had rudimentary radar systems active, but none that seemed dedicated to be dedicated to scanning the solar system. However this may change during the course of its investigation so the probe decided to eject its massive interstellar engines and related support modules. This was stored in one of the moonlets orbiting the fourth planet. A red, and mostly dead, world. Its main mass stored safely, the probe approached the planet after it determined there was no space sensor network that could detect its presence. For years it studied the radio emissions. It watched as the civilization began it's tentative steps into space. On occasion the probe entered the planet's, Earth as the natives called it, atmosphere to engage in close observation data collection. These were risky during daylight and it avoided missions during sunlit periods. As time progressed the natives were developing more space activity. The probe collected live samples of what appeared to be non sentient species and analyzed their structure. During these studies the probe slowly began to unravel the communication symbols it was monitoring in the radio emissions. It was quite busy processing a wealth of data. However the languages were still impossible to decipher. It would need to study some of the sentient's closely. At first it limited its studies to dead sentient's it found in war zones. The bodies provided a wealth of data, the brain structure was of interest but of limited value once the sentient had ceased to function. After some thought the probe came to the conclusion it would not be violating its creators mission guidelines if it took live specimens to study as long as it did not cause them harm. So the probe gathered live specimens from time to time, studying how they functioned using non destructive techniques. The probe AI was most interested in brain function. After many attempts it succeeded in unraveling the sentient's language form. It was with some dismay it found that many language types were in use. However as they were all based on the same brain function the Probe AI was able to decipher the most common languages. At least the ones that were being broadcast on RF emissions. The probe had managed to gather hundreds of live data samples, which were all replaced from their point of capture at a later date, usually quickly, however some of them it studied for many days. However as time progressed it had to cease these samplings. Entering the Earths airspace becoming to risky for close observation as the humans were operating more advanced radars, and had began to probe space with these radars. Of particular concern to the probe was the U.S. military radar probings of Earth near space. It was becoming increasingly difficult to evade these radars. In addition, the major power was developing some rather advanced weaponry that caused the probe some concern, plasma EMF and coherent pulse light based. The probe placed itself in one of the gravitational wells, known as LaGrange points to Terran's, and it resumed remote observations. Years passed and the probe watched the Terran's launch more of their own probes to investigate the solar system. One of the Terran probes that were on course to Mars the AI captured, after it determined the technology was to capable of detecting its stellar engines hidden just under the surface of one of Mars moons. Time passed and the AI marveled at how quickly some advances were being made by the Terran's. The ciphers the Terran's were now using on many of their emissions made it increasingly difficult to monitor them remotely. Many of the ciphers the AI was able to break. If a AI could laugh it would have, as it seemed the Terran's had put intentional back doors in some of these ciphers. This made them easier to break after the back door was discovered. However an increasing level of the RF traffic was ciphered so well the AI could not crack the codes. It was this and one other recent developments caused the AI to reach a decision on future course of action. The recent -event- was the destruction of the Mars Observer. The AI learned a great deal of NASA's plans by monitoring NASA Select and it would not be long before the Terran's sent more probes to Mars. Further the U.S. military had developed it's plasma EMF weaponry to a sufficient level to make close Earth observations quite risky. The AI had already lost several remote probes in the Terran year to this system. The AI determined it could safely plant a unit to live among the Terran's to gather more data. This unit would mimic the human form exactly, down to the DNA. It would establish itself and would beam data to the AI in encoded coherent light emissions on a prearranged schedule. The probe AI would maintain contact with the humaniform probe in similar fashion. However it would have to limit it's emissions to micro bursts, to avoid detection. On the Probes surface, a module was grown. The module served as both the birthing chamber and incept vehicle for the humaniform. As the humaniform was a biological entity it took longer to construct than a straightforward AI. The brain in particular had to be created with care. Once the Probe AI was satisfied the humaniform was stable and functional it began to teach it. Slowly at first. Much of what the Probe AI knew about Terran culture and technology it passed to the humaniform. As it progressed, the Probe AI tried to increase the humaniform probe data absorption rate. However it soon became apparent that the humaniform would have to be augmented with it's own AI. Even with neural enhancement the human brain was not up to the Probe AI's idea of par. So that humaniform was rebuilt using a new design. One that integrated AI from the start. AI would be the core. The human brain form would overlap. However that introduced a new problem. If the humainform probe was dissected for some reason, it's non-human origins would be discovered. The Probe AI weighed the risks and determined it would be safe to fortify the humaniform probe with nanotechnology. Nanites. In a worse case scenario the humaniform AI could engage self destruct, which would take place automatically in case of end of life function. Or by conscious choice by the humaniform if it felt the need. On the bright side the nanotechnology would greatly enhance the humaniform's survivability and capabilities. The humaniform was ready. It would be inserted complete with sufficient ID for it to pass as a citizen of the U.S.A. and a large quantity of cash. On earlier missions the Probe had collected samples of same and duplicated them perfectly. The cash even had correctly incremented serial numbers. The ID consisted of a Texas drivers license and a US passport. The Probe AI had sufficient data to create these as perfect duplicates. However they would not stand close scrutiny as the numbers were all faked. The humaniform Probe would have to use it's own wits to acquire better ID once it was established. The Probe AI went into low Earth orbit in such a manner to avoid the space probing radars. It ran a final check on the humaniform probe and began it's final preparation. Soon it would be ready to jettison the pod that would land in a remote section of northern Mexico, not far from the Texas border. ...................... Major Jeff Chambers was staring at his monitor in disbelief. After the initial shock wore off he dialed the number that would initiate Operation Red. The line was picked up. "Sir, we got a BUG on optical tracking. A real one sir. It's on data channel A6B9." The voice on the other end of the line said,"Stand by, will dial that in on the monitor here." A few seconds later Major Chambers heard, "Christ, you ain't kidding. How long have you had visual?" "Sir I called you within fifteen seconds of visual here. At the rate that things moving it will be on dark side within 10 minutes." "Roger that. Keep that thing centered." The voice sighed. "Keep the line open. I got some calls to make." "Yes Sir," Major Chambers switched the phone over to speaker phone mode and stared at the screen. He wondered if they were actually going to go all the way on Operation Red. For the past few years his government had been quietly putting optical range sensing equipment in low Earth orbit. Part of the Star Wars program Reagen had begun. The program had done very well and certain powers had decided to install a system that may help them detect some of the unknown bogeys that had plagued them for years. Not only detect, but possibly to shoot one down. The powers had decided the bogeys, UFO's, were a threat. Ten minutes later he had an answer. "Major. Go Full RED. Bring that thing down. Or try to." The voice on the phone said. "Yes Sir. Full RED initiated." Full RED meant he could use anything short of a nuke to hit the BUG with. That meant he was basically limited with new high energy particle weapons and the plasma EMF pulse. Actually their best chance was with the latter as the missile's carrying the nuke's were just to damn slow. On the trajectory the object was following it would pass well within range of three such earth based platforms. Protocol dictated he wait until the object was within range before painting the target with space born and ground based tracking radars. In the meantime the network was being coordinated with the optical trackers. Once the target reached a certain point the Major would push a few buttons. From there the rest would be done on automatic. No human interaction needed, besides that would just slow things down. It looked like the Perth, Australia station would get the first shot. ..................... The Probe AI was alerted as soon as it detected multiple radar sweeps painting its surface. From multiple points, space based and ground based radars had lit it up like a star. In microseconds it analyzed the situation. It was obvious the Terran's had been tracking it via passive means for some time. The Probe lit up its own active sensors, just in time to pick up a large energy build up on a object just above its current orbit. Suddenly it was blasted with a powerful proton beam. Then a high energy plasma wave slammed into it from one of the ground stations. Sensors overloaded the Probe AI began a series of radical maneuvers. But the maneuvers were limited due to the G force restrictions the AI had to maintain, else the humaniform would be crushed and become nonfunctional. Not wanting to waste its work, for it may be possible to reinsert later, the Probe AI didn't move as fast as it should have, it underestimated the power of the Terran systems. The next Pulse EMF blast that hit it was of far greater magnitude than the first. That was a mistake. In milliseconds the Probe AI felt something give way in its core reactor. An massive overload a result of the massive energy fluxes it was having to shunt and the vast energies it was using during the maneuvers. Something it's designers had not intended. The Probe AI made one last decision. It launched the pod, dumping what little it could to the humaniform before the pod detached. Its key imperative. "SURVIVE". The Probe AI calculated the humaniform had less than a 50% chance of surviving the entry phase as the pod module had suffered significant damage and the humaniform itself had suffered from the energy flux. The Probe AI free of restraint shut down the compensators and shot away from the Earth. It almost succeeded in safely shutting down the reactor. Almost. Seconds later and 10,000 miles above Earth it flashed out of existence. It's remains but tiny shards of material that would circle the sun forever. ........................................ The pod plunged into further into the atmosphere, on a course not originally intended. The pods's last second instructions had been modified to allow it to seek a landing site that it's cargo could survive in, however it had to be someplace remote. The systems were marginal at best as it attempted to avoid plunging into the ocean and it settled on a course that would take it toward the upper region of the continent known as South America to the Terran's. The landing was non nominal but its cargo survived. As soon as the pod was sure the humaniform had extracted itself safely it began the emergency destruct sequence. Had it been in good condition it would have returned to the mother AI probe, however it's systems were to damaged to attempt to do so, besides the mother AI had left instructions it should self destruct upon landing. Within a few short hours the destructor nanites would reduce the pod to nothing more than constituent atoms, once their task was complete they themselves would dissemble and cease to function. The humaniform stumbled away some distance from the pod, in some confusion. It didn't know what had happened during the insertion, but it knew something had gone wrong. It's wits were addled by the energy flux and it spent some time analyzing it's condition. It determined it was physically nominal, however it's mental state was uncertain. It detected some damage to it's core data centers, it appeared much had been lost. It paused and looked back at the pod and realized in the rush it had forgotten to take the kit bag with it's American ID and cash. Still unsure of it's footing it slowly returned to the pod and was near the hatch when the pod's audible communication system announced total system failure in it's power reactor and that it estimated 30 seconds before catastrophic failure. The humaniform didn't have time to grab the kit bag and fled, as fast as its still clumsy feet could carry it, away from the pod. It stumbled through the dark and slammed into several trees, as it was quite dark. There was a flash of light from behind and the humaniform felt a blast of heated air strike it from behind, The blast flung it though the air and slammed it into a tree with sufficient force to cause it to lose consciousness. Some minutes passed before the humaniform roused, it was in great pain and had suffered greatly from the blast. It slowly pulled itself up and screamed in agony as the flesh on its back had been burned badly. Clamping down on the pain centers it studied the carnage. Behind it were some fires that cast sufficient glow to see by. It slowly worked its way back toward the pod and as it got closer to the center of the blast site it saw many trees had been flattened to the ground. The humaniform soon saw it was useless to go further and the danger of getting caught in an inferno was to great. The pod was a total loss. Lost and confused it stumbled away, this was not what was supposed to have happened. Mother had laid out the mission insertion to be at a specific point in Northern Mexico, not far from the U.S. border. It's identity, Alisha Anders, was to have established itself in the US. It had instructions to build a coherent light wave device to establish communications with the Mother Probe AI and relay data to it. Alisha, humaniform, nominal human, plunged further into the jungle. This was not were it was supposed to be, nor did it know exactly were this was. Alisha considered self destructing as a serious alternative. The mission was obviously out of parameters. She was seriously injured and may not survive, she didn't have her ID nor her cash reserves. The only thing that stopped her was Mother's last message. Survive. She would attempt to do so, and establish communications with Mother, who she knew would be listening. Alisha had the orbital data set in her records, she would build the laser device, contact Mother, and find out what had happened. ..............
