The Waitress by M.C. Don't try to leave without paying in Jane's restaurant The three large university baseball players entered the pizza restaurant and sat down at a table. The Friday evening dinner rush hadn't really begun yet and the dinning room was still fairly quiet. " Can I get you boys something ? " Jane, the pretty college co-ed, asked with a smile. Without even looking up, Jeff, one of the star players on the baseball team, barked," we'll have a large pizza and two pitchers of beer...ASAP ! " His two friends - Ray and Bob - both laughed." Very well, " Jane answered with a sigh, " I'll bring it out here as soon as it's ready." A few minutes later she brought over their order. " It's about time," Jeff grunted. "Jocks," Jane muttered to herself as she walked away. By now, other customers were beginning to arrive and Jane went over to take their orders. From time to time, however, she would glance over at the three athletes. As the evening manager, Jane had been warned by the owner about a group of athletes from the university that were going around to restaurants in the area, ordering meals and then sneaking out without paying. There was something about these three that aroused her suspicion. As the restaurant filled up, Jane and the other waitresses seemed to be preoccupied with their other patrons. When the three baseball players finished their meal, they looked at each other and winked. They then began to leave through a side door...without paying. They got out to the parking lot and high-fived each other; once again they had managed to get away with yet another free meal. Now, it was time to go out carousing; as university students usually did on a Friday evening. So far their weekend seemed to be getting off to a great start...until, that is, they heard a loud and firm female voice from behind them say," hold on there boys; didn't you forget something...like paying ? " Her suspicions had proven correct...and Jane was pissed. Unlike the spoiled male jocks at the university - many of whom receive full athletic scholarships just for playing a sport - Jane, from a middle class family, had to work her ass off in order to put herself through college. True, she did receive some help in the form of a partial scholarship due to her academic abilities; but that only helped her with tuition. She was forced to take out student loans; which would have to be paid back. For the rest of her expenses, Jane was totally dependant on the salary and tips she received from working long hours on weekends as a waitress. That's why, when she saw these three university athletes trying to walk out without paying, she felt the anger surge inside of her. Jane asked one of the other waitresses to cover for her and quickly went out after them. They were not going to get away with this...not if she could help it. Although Jane was indeed pissed off, she also felt it prudent to try and avoid an incident at the restaurant; so she tried to keep her temper in check." If you'll be so kind as to return to the restaurant and pay for your meal, I'll forget that this incident ever took place. You boys can then go out and enjoy your Friday night." It might have been the two pitchers of beer they drank during their dinner. Or maybe their male egos could not tolerate being ordered around by a much smaller woman. Or, perhaps, it was the arrogance that young, pampered college athletes sometimes have. Whatever the reason, these three men - despite being caught red handed leaving the restaurant without paying - refused to comply. " And what if we don't," Jeff replied as he stared down at her," just what in the hell are you going to do about it ? " That did it; Jane could contain herself no longer. If the jocks had expected the pretty waitress to back down from their challenge, they were sadly mistaken. Jane removed her apron and angrily began walking towards them. " This is your last warning boys," the fearless girl said as she approached, " pay what you owe for your dinner now ! ...or be prepared to face the consequences." An observer watching from the sidelines would have found the scene unfolding in the parking lot very strange. One rather small girl - perhaps five feet six inches tall and weighing about 130 pounds - was confronting three large male athletes; each one around six feet tall and at least 200 well proportioned pounds. "It's not enough that the university gives you pompous jocks full scholarships just to play baseball; you have to stiff us poor working girls too. Well, you've pulled this stunt for the last time; I'll make sure of that." Jeff, the largest of the three and the closest to her, was the first to feel her wrath. When Jane was only a few feet away from him she suddenly whirled around and landed a hard round house kick to the side of his face. Stunned by the force of her blow, Jeff reeled backwards. Jane quickly followed that up with several surprisingly strong punches to his stomach and then solid another kick to his jaw; sending the large athlete to the pavement. So fast did she drop him that Bob and Ray stood motionless as they watched in disbelief. Satisfied that Jeff wouldn't be getting up anytime soon, Jane then turned her attention to them. Ten years of martial arts training gave the pretty college girl the skill as well as the confidence to not only defend herself, but to also dish out a good beating if she felt it was necessary; as she felt it was in this case. " O.K. boys, now it's your turn." Hurling herself at the two of them, Jane struck with the speed and expertise that only a third degree black belt in karate could. Despite their superior size and strength, they were no match for Jane's fighting skills as she easily, and comprehensively, battered them both around. " I think it's about time somebody put you conceited jocks in your place," she said as she flattened Bob with a strong, board shattering punch to his jaw. He landed, as she planned, on top of Jeff. " What gives you the right to play games with other people's livelihoods just for fun ? " Half a minute later, Jane sent Ray on top of Bob with a powerful kick. In less than three minutes, the once proud, arrogant baseball players were lying in a neat pile; battered senseless by an angry girl. As she stared down at them with her hands on her hips, Jane considered what she should do next. Calling in the police was not really an option as it would create a lot of *complications* that neither she nor they wanted. Angry though she was, Jane did not want them to have a police record which might scar them for years to come or see them expelled from the university. She did feel, however, that these self- centered athletes needed to be taught a good lesson in both humility and responsibility and the beating she just gave them, humbling though it must have been, would not radically alter their outlook. There had to be another way to make her point. As Jane pondered the situation she suddenly had an idea...and a smile appeared on her pretty face." All right boys," she said in an imperious tone of voice," let's get up now...it's time to go to work." Reaching down, Jane grabbed Ray and Bob by the collars of their shirts and yanked them to their feet; she then did the same with Jeff. As she marched the dazed athletes back into the restaurant, Jane laughed, " you're in luck boys, we happen to be shorthanded tonight so you'll be helping us out." Upon entering, Jane led them to the back of the kitchen. " Ray and Bob, your job will be to wash the dirty dishes. Jeff, you'll be bussing tables tonight. And just so you guys don't get any ideas about running off, give me your wallets - I'll return them to you when you've finished working." "You gotta be kidding me, girlie," Jeff said; his masculine pride suddenly reasserting itself. " There's no way in hell I'm going to be doing this kind of work. I'll agree to pay for the pizza and beers, but that's all." " I'm afraid it's too late for that Jeffy," Jane responded." I gave you boys a chance to come back and pay - two in fact - and you refused both times. Now, you're going to work it off. Maybe then you'll begin to understand what it feels like to have to work for a living instead of having everything handed to you on a silver platter just because you're good at a sport. In fact, you might even learn something from this experience; like a little humility." " NO FUCKING WAY ! "Jeff screamed. Jane sighed again. " It seems, Jeffy, as if I need to teach you another lesson." She grabbed him firmly by his shirt and threw him up against a wall. " If you know what's good for you, you'll stay out of this," she said sternly to Bob and Ray who, wisely, remained off to the side. Pinning Jeff against the wall with her left hand, Jane then began to slap his face hard back and forth with her right. Even though he stood half a foot taller than she did and outweighed her by 75 pounds, Jeff was helpless against Jane as she smacked him around at will. Finally, with his pride now shattered and on the verge of crying, he begged her to stop. " Are you going to be a good boy and not give me any more problems tonight, Jeffy ? " " Yes," he sobbed meekly. "Good. Now give me your wallets and get your aprons on...and let's get to work ! " For the remainder of that evening the three of them worked their asses off; cleaning tables, washing dishes, and mopping floors. Jane made sure they were always busy." Gee Jeff, you're doing great," she teased at one point. " I think you're a natural at bussing tables. Bob and Ray also have the dish washing down pat. Did you boys ever think about giving up your baseball careers ? I think you could have a bright future here; tee, hee, hee." For some reason, Jeff didn't find her comments very amusing. About an hour before closing they got some additional help; from an unexpected source. Two members of the university's football team and their dates also attempted to sneak out without paying. But the ever vigilant Jane spotted them leaving and went out after them. Jeff smiled to himself as he watched her go. " Little Miss karate expert may have been too much for us," he thought smugly," but let's see what happens when she goes up against those two football players." His smugness turned to shock ( and grudging admiration ) a few minutes later, when Jane reentered the restaurant; dragging the four would-be absconders in behind her. The football players both had bloody noses and several welts and bruises on their faces; their girlfriends were crying. Jane, noticing the stunned look on Jeff's face, winked at him as she casually walked by. She led her new *helpers* into the back. Jeff listened in. " You boys will help Bob and Ray here with the dishes and you girls can start mopping up the floor...but first, give me your wallets." When the football players objected, Jeff heard, " Slap !, Whack !, Slap !, Whack ! Slap ! Whack ! " " O.K. O.K. we'll do it ! " When Jane emerged from the kitchen, she walked over to Jeff and giggled," good help is so hard to find these days. Now Jeffy, I see some tables that are just begging to be cleaned." Stunned, he quietly went back to work. As the last customers filtered out of the restaurant and the clean-up neared completion, Jane called her 'crew' - the three baseball players, the two football players and their girlfriends - together. " Well, I hope you all learned something this evening; don't ever try to leave my restaurant without paying ! If I ever catch you trying to pull this stunt again, I'll make you work here for a week, is that clear ? ( Needless to say, it was ). " Good," Jane continued," now here are your wallets; minus what you owed us for dinner. You're all free to leave now...and do have a very nice weekend." Twenty minutes later - after making sure everything was as it should be - Jane walked out of the pizza restaurant. She locked the back door and began the short walk to the apartment she rented near the university." Another Friday night alone," she sighed to herself. " Well, at least I had some fun tonight." She hadn't walked far when she heard a voice from behind her calling out her name. Turning around, she was surprised to see the towering figure of - of all people - Jeff. " What are you still doing here ? " she asked him," I thought you and your friends would be 'doing the town' by now." Jeff slowly approached her with his head down. " I - I wanted to...to apologize for the way I behaved tonight. I'm...I'm very sorry. You were right to do what you did...we deserved it." An awkward moment of silence followed. Jane, because she was in something of a state of shock - this caught her totally off guard - and Jeff, because he was trying to build up the courage for what he wanted to say next. " Jane...I was wondering if...if you aren't busy that is...well...maybe we could catch the late show at the cinema tonight." Another awkward silence. Jeff's heart literally stood still until he saw Jane's lips begin to curl upward; the definite makings of a smile. " Why Jeff, what a wonderful idea. Yes, I'd love to." To ease the apprehension she sensed he must be feeling at this moment, Jane put her arms around Jeff's neck and gently lowered his head until they were eye-to-eye. " It took a lot of courage to say what you just said Jeff. I'd be honored to go out with you." She leaned over and gave him a kiss on the cheek. Then, taking him by the hand, said," come with me; I have to get out of my work clothes and freshen up a bit." Hand in hand, the two of them began to walk off in the direction of Jane's apartment.
