Working fine.

Down on the server farm

Molly failed. I was trying out some tweaks on the apache configuration, and it suddenly failed. It's failed so badly that when I reboot it, there's no screen display. It's pulling power, so I don't think it's the PSU. I'll have to get my hands on it to find out what's wrong.

So I brought up alice as a replacement. It's normally powered off, so I powered it on, and updated the files from my latest backup, taken about 12 hours previously. But when I tried to bring it online, I found that I'd forgotten to set up all the usernames, so I had to do that (I had most of them, but five were missing on the backup, because they were newish).

Then I had to ensure that the signup usernames gathered by the signup server could be transferred to alice, check that my firewall configuration was still valid, suddenly remember that I have to do a "clear xlat" in order to be able to access alice instead of molly ... you can see how this goes.

And there were several other minor things I had to make right, so by the time I had it working right, it was four hours later, so I didn't get to sleep until after 5am.

I've changed my backup system slightly, so that these important files are backed up.

And several days later, I noticed a bad smell. Careful investigation revealed that it was coming from one of the UPSes. So I took it offline, and took it apart. The sealed lead acid (SLA) batteries inside were distorted and swollen. It was so bad, I had to use a crowbar and mallet to get them out.

I ordered replacement batteries on Ebay, installed them, and the UPS looks fine now.

And dome days later, I also needed to replace one of my DSL routers (I use them for doing backups).

So, quite a busy month down on the server farm!
