Running well.
Last month, I told you about the big switchoff - which was then postponed to . February 9th. So you're probably wondering what happened.
Nothing.
I got all the computers onto a single power feed, so I could switch that over to the generator, and then waited. And waited. And waited.
No power cut.
Eventually, they told us that they wouldn't need to cut our power after all.
Sigh.
I'm using a new design of computer; it has 16 2 terabyte drives, for a total of 32 terabytes, all in a single box! This should reduce the amount of power that the server farm consumes, which will also reduce the cooling load; that reduces the power even more. So it's a money saving, plus it's very green.
I've only built one of them so far.
The sponsorships now are by giving women server space and bandwidth, so they can operate their web sites without having to pay these fees. There's also photoshoots, which gets some revenue into their hands.

I checked the site statistics that Sandra counts up each night.
At the end of February 2010, there were about 1,139,000 pictures (134 gigabytes), 394 gigabytes of video, 12,660 text files (mostly stories) and a total of about 530 gigabytes. There's about 405 million pictures altogether in Newsthumbs, increasing at about 5 million per month.
