Working fine. After the move, I checked over all the servers, and found about a dozen that needed some attention.

Report on Sally McNeil

BODYBUILDER SALLY McNEIL FACES NEW CRISIS IN JAIL AFTER 12 YEARS INSIDE

By Wessex Man

California, Jan 31, '09 -- Bodybuilder and strength athlete Sally McNeil needs rescuing. Everything has been going wrong. The guards at Valley State Prison for Women have been harassing her severely for weeks and now she'sbeen hit with disciplinary notices which could delay her Parole date indefinitely.

Sally can't even exercise. "I can't go to the Yard because they've given me a 90 day loss of yard access due to a second 115 (disciplinary notice) for behaviour which could lead to violence under Section 3005 (a)," she tells me in a note dated Jan 17.

"Right now(the guard) who is after me is under investigation. I've had a few people write letters on my behalf because I saw the writing on the wall. I know what I am up against. So far I havn't received a final copy of my 115 guilty verdict." Sally has been chased around since late last year, with the authorities moving her from one cell to another . She's been banished to the hard core sector of the jail populated by 'revolving door' dregs of society who are violent and hysterical. She has to live in a small cell of eight inmates of this kind.

Right now the tide of inmate opinion has swung against her, encouraged by the guards who are proclaiming that she is a turbulent menace. Far from the truth of course. All Sally wants to do is go home and resume her weight training. On top of this her lawyer, who promised to help her launch a Clemency Appeal to Arnold, has gone to ground.

"It's getting real bad in prison," she writes, "Fights all the time over tobacco. There was a fight in my room over Stellastealing my bunkie Anisha's rollie (cigarette). Every day someone who works outside the prison gatesmuggles the tobacco. The C.O.s (guards) catch them all the time.... I have a mask to put on. I don't want to die of lung cancer so I protect myself."

No-one seems to remember that Sally had a real career at national level in bodybuildingand weights. While iserving in the U.S. Marines she won the U.S. Armed Services physique contest (female, middle weight) for two years running in 1988, '89.

Down on the server farm

I'm going to experiment with a new design for my "standard server", this will have six 1-terabyte drives installed. If it works out, that should cut down drastically on the number of servers I need - the current "standard server" is only 0.9 terabytes. Only!

But technology has moved on. Previously, my "standard newsthumbs server" was three 300 gb drives, for 900 gb. But now, I can buy a 1000gb (1 tb) drive quite cheaply. Which means I can make these servers with just one drive.

But wait - I can do better. I've built three servers with six 1tb drives, and then I thought, hmm, maybe I can do even better? So I've built a server with 14 1tb drives, 14,000 gigabytes in one 5U box. It seems to be working fine, and I think that's what I'll be building for a while.

This will economise on motherboards, memory, and electricity, because each of these monsters can replace 14 of my previous servers.

Sponsorships

The sponsorships now are by giving women server space and bandwidth, so they can operate their web sites without having to pay these fees. There's also photoshoots, which gets some revenue into their hands, as well as the traditional direct-funding sponsorship.

Back Page

I checked the site statistics that Sandra counts up each night.

At the end of January 2009, there were about 1,049,000 pictures (108 gigabytes), 336 gigabytes of video, 12,200 text files (mostly stories) and a total of about 444 gigabytes. There's about 340 million pictures altogether in Newsthumbs, increasing at about 5 million per month.
