A hard man is good to beat

May, 2006

It's summer in England! The garden is lovely. I've got a pair of binoculars now, so I can watch the wildlife "up close". I've watched a fox prowling across, a nervous-looking deer, cats bristling at each other (there seems to be a turf war going on right now), and rabbits.

Newsthumbs

Going fine. I did another server-swap at the end of May, so the newsthumbs for May and before, will be on the Older Server (which is actually about 70 servers working as a team).

The Server Farm

Another server at Watford failed - this one was one of the unused spares, so no problem.

The server carrying the message boards and the chatroom has now been running non-stop for over 1000 days! Also the main name server.

Inderstanding the internet - mules

I don't know if you read any spam - I'd guess that occasionally you do. I do, because sometimes, the subject line makes me think that it might be a real email.

Occasionally, I read one that sounds like a business opportunity. The scheme is dressed up in various ways, but when you get down to the essence, it consists of, you receive some money, and you transfer some money, and you get to keep 10% or so of the amount. It sounds risk-free. It sounds great. It sounds too good to be true. And, of course, it is.

This is what is called "money laundering".

When a criminal has stolen money (perhaps via a fraud), they need to move it around a bit so that it isn't easily tracable. So, for example, maybe a fraudulent bank transfer is made from a victim's account into your account. You then send the money, perhaps as cash, to the criminal. This way, when the fraud is discovered, the trail leads to your account, and the criminal is safe. Another way to move money untracably, is Western Union.

Apart from the obvious ethical issue in taking part in such a scheme, imagine what happens when the fraud is uncovered. You would be seen as part of the scheme, and you'd be charge with handling stolen money. Your protests that "I didn't know it was stolen" might not help you. To start with, that money will be confiscated from your bank account; the fact that you already sent it to the fraudster, means you'll be out of pocket.

So if you do get a spam email trying to recruit you to be a mule - don't.

Spams of the Month

The comments on the spams are mine, of course. These are actual spams sent to me, which just strike me as funny. I don't include their contact details - go find your own spammers!

By the way, if you're using StoneColdMail (which is free to web site members) then you won't see most of these spams, they'll be delivered into your "Spam" folder.

We have received the information, that some people have unauthorized access to
some internet banking accounts. As a result, we decided to carry out an
additional verification of the accounts, which are in a high-risk group. To

My personality is just fine, thank you.

Sponsorships

Most of the sponsorships now are by giving women server space and bandwidth, so they can operate their web sites without having to pay these fees. There's also photoshoots, which gets some revenue into their hands, as well as the traditional direct-funding sponsorship.

On the Message Boards

There's been a major discussion on my board, about the message board software. Once again, we're talking about the idea of changing to a different software package, possibly to YaBB (that's the package I put on Herbiceps and other sites). But I've also been changing the existing software to accomodate many of the things that people say they want.

Look here to see a new style of board, with threads, and multiple posts on the same page, and the ability to handle as many inline links as you want to have. The old style of viewing the boards will still be available when that version of the software starts to be used.

The theological discussions continue. Terry and GrappleJack are the main protagonists in the theological debate.

Board access

Mavis is counting the number of times the message list is checked for each board. This gives a very different picture from the one above.

It's still about FBBs. FBBs come first, but theology is very popular.

Officially, there's a drought on, and we're not allowed to water the garden with hosepipes. In practice, it doesn't matter because we just had the wettest May for 20 years. Last time we had a drought, we had great weather. This time around, people are making jokes about having to queue in the rain to fill up their bottles from stand pipes.

And look at the huge arse in Yorkshire.

I checked the site statistics that Sandra counts up each night.

At the end of May 2006, there were about 899,000 pictures (71 gigabytes), 180 gigabytes of video, 10,300 text files (mostly stories) and a total of about 252 gigabytes. There's about 186 million pictures altogether in Newsthumbs, increasing at about 5 million per month.
