Brrr. November is when the last of the summer is chased away by the frost. The ash tree has turned yellow and brown, and the leaf drop has started. And has blocked one of my gutters, so I had to go out in the freezing rain and stick my hand into ice water to unblock. Afterwards, I ran warm water on my hand for five minutes before is started to feel again.

Ianth (my nameserver) and freya (hosting the chatroom and message boards) have been running non-stop and non-rebooted, for over 820 days now.
When drives fail, it's possible to reformat them and put them back into service, but my experience is that it isn't worth doing, because if it's so old that it's out of warranty, then its value is about $20. And it'll fail again, which will be a nuisance. So, I've started giving them away. For example, a non-profit recently got a boxfull of them from me, together with stern warnings about the likelihood that they'll fail again. But if all they use them for is training, or stuff that doesn't need important irreplacable data, they'll be OK.
Other than that ... nothing to report, which is good news.
There's now a free version; the main difference is that the video size is very small.

The words "please" and "thank you" seem to have dropped into disuse.
I get a lot of email, even if you don't count spam, and I got one just recently, "cancel my subscription". Well, I will, of course, and there's no obligation on anyone to say "please" or "thank you", but it just seems to me that the extra cost of the word "please" in an email is very low, especially when you set it against the effect, which is to make me feel just a tiny fraction kinder towards the writer.
The battle to defend "thank you" against the invasion of "thankyou" continues, but I have little hope of winning it; the most we can hope for is to stave off our inevitable defeat. Still, I should be grateful that we're still getting even a one-word "thankyou", although the context is usually "thankyou for not smoking", which is a thinly disguised commandment.
I shall continue to use the magic words "please" and "thank you"; magic because of the great effect for a trivial cost. I hope you will too.
Thank you for reading this article.

I don't make these up, although the comments on the spams are mine, of course. These are actual spams sent to me, which just strike me as funny. I don't include their contact details - go find your own spammers!
By the way, if you're using StoneColdMail
(which is free to web site members) then you won't see most of these spams, they'll be delivered
into your "Spam" folder.
You do not have to go out as you will work as an independent contractor
right from your home office. Your job is absolutely legal. You can earn
up to $3000-4000 depending on time you will spend for this job. You do
not need any capital to start. The employees who make efforts and work
hard have a strong possibility to become managers. Anyway our employees
never leave us.
That last sentence sounds a bit ominous.

Let me get this straight. You're willing to lend me $401,500 even though you
know nothing at all about me.

Most of the sponsorships now are by giving women server space and bandwidth, so they can operate their web sites without having to pay these fees. There's also photoshoots, which gets some revenue into their hands, as well as the traditional direct-funding sponsorship.

There's been a major discussion on my board, about the message board software. Once again, we're talking about the idea of changing to a different software package, possibly to YaBB (that's the package I put on Herbiceps and other sites). But I've also been changing the existing software to accomodate many of the things that people say they want.
Look here to see a new style of board, with threads, and multiple posts on the same page, and the ability to handle as many inline links as you want to have. The old style of viewing the boards will still be available when that version of the software starts to be used.

I find this just so hilarious.
I checked the site statistics that Sandra counts up each night.
At the end of November 2005, there were about 883,000 pictures (67 gigabytes), 174 gigabytes of video, 9900 text files (mostly stories) and a total of about 242 gigabytes. There's about 160 million pictures altogether in Newsthumbs, increasing at about 5 million per month.
