The Shopping Mall

I added an 80 minute video of Tatianna Butler, the latest heavyweight champion sensation. You can get that for $30, inclusive of taxes and postage, which has to be a pretty good bargain!

Sponsorships

We currently have six running; Nicole Bass, Andrulla Blanchette, Sheila Burgess, Christine Envall, Sarah Dunlap and Marilyn Perret. Nicole and Sheila have said that they'll be at the Femsport Valkyarie Festival on October 1st.

The latest Sponsorship, added to the above, is Julia Santana. Julia is a powerlifter, the first powerlifter that we've sponsored. You can see the first few of her pictures in the Gallery

Julia also has a Message Board, and is a frequent visitor to the Chatroom. And she has her own web site. Her wolf just had a bunch of cubs, and we had a live commentary on that while she was littering, in the chatroom.

Understanding the Internet - a guide to the language

The internet has created a new vocabulary. Some of the words, such as :-) and LOL are sufficiently non-English not to be confusing. Either you know what they mean, or you don't. You won't think they mean one thing when they mean another.

There's been many guides published to these shorthands, and I won't pollute the packet-stream with another one.

However, the worst thing in any new language, is words that sound like they mean one thing, and actually mean something completely different. Like in Germany, don't ask someone to give you a "kissen" unless you really do want a cushion. And don't ask the haberdasher for "Ein Kuss" unless you really do want him to kiss you.

Check out Three Men on the Bummel for what happens when you get these confused. Buy this book, it's one of the funniest ever written, published 100 years ago.

INTERVIEW WITH SHEILA BURGESS -- Canada's mega-voltage Miss Hercules

By Wessex Man

VANCOUVER, B.C., Sept 1st -- Top Canadian bodybuilder Sheila Burgess is a mature beauty who genuinely loves to wrestle. And she's discovered belatedly that wrestling men can be profitable as well as exciting.

"I'm now doing private wrestling and loving every minute of it. I was thrilled to find out two years ago that there were men who would pay me to kick their butts ! And all these years I'd been doing it for free," she told me in an interview.

Nowadays, in her 30s, her honey tanned ultra-muscular physique compels worldwide attention, on or off the wrestling mat. Sheila's ripe vascular biceps (16"), exceptional chest (47") and classically muscled legs (thighs 25") generate a deeply visceral impact. At 5' 5-1/2" in height and around 150 lbs weight in contest condition she personifies the unabashed elegance of serious female muscle. Suffice to add, she's benched 325 lbs, squatted 500 and deadlifted 375.

Today she's in ripped shape for the Canadian National in Calgary, Alberta, on September 2. "Hopefully I will get my pro card there, and do my first pro show in 2001. As for the MsO....well....let's work on getting my pro card first."

WHY MATURE MEN ADMIRE SHEILA'S PHYSIQUE

I asked her how ordinary people reacted to her bodybuilt muscularity.

Sheila: "I get various responses. Definitely people will stare, but often they will work up the courage to actually approach me to ask how long I've been lifting.....I've seen people walk into light posts, walls, and each other, just because they were so busy looking at me."

"....And it's amazing how much male attention I get !," she adds. "Guys who are professed muscle lovers always think they are such a small minority. I'm glad to report guys.....YOU ARE NOT!".

She finds negative comments usually come from young men in their teens or early 20s. "I believe that might be due to immaturity, and their own battle with their male sense of security."

"I find the older the guy, the more interested he is in just how big my arms are and what exactly they might feel like!"

JAPANESE TOURISTS FEAST ON HER ARMS

Sheila travels a lot and often finds herself in airports. "That's where I have the best time people watching. Total strangers will do the most amazing things to get a good look !"

"I once had a 16 person Japanese tour group surround me to get a better look. Their interpreter fired so many questions at me it was hard to keep up." These Japanese tourists all wanted to squeeze her biceps and take pictures.

"They were totally delightful," she says.

Sheila says her muscles can provoke jealousy, even anger, between couples who happen to be casting eyes over her body. "I've seen many a guy get a good slap from wives and girlfriends for looking as well. I have a hard time not smiling whan that happens. I usually try and give them a wink and a quick flex when their other half isn't looking."

On the whole, she says, she gets more than enough admiration and positive feedback to offset occasional negative reactions.

HOW SHEILA GOT INTO SPORTS AND MUSCLE

With her father in the Canadian airforce her childhood was all across Canada and also in England and Germany.

I asked about her early athletics and gym activities.

Sheila: "I was a jock in school ! I started cross country running when I was 8 years old. I also ran track and field and started that when I was 11......I also played on the soccer team, field hockey and volley ball." Soon she was on a boys ice hockey team and in due course took up ballet and Scottish highland dancing. After school Sheila became an aerobics and dance teacher.

Her first date with bodybuilding came when she was at university. "At the time I was the aerobics coordinator for a gym in Vancouver and decided since I was there already, maybe I would try weight training."

".....The owner of the gym bet me $50 that I couldn't put a 1/2 inch on my arms in a month, and well.....I went to town on my arms ! I ended up putting on 3/4 of an inch....won the bet....and never looked back !"

Sheila competed in her first contest after just eight months of training, winning the middle weight and the overall. "I decided I liked this winning thing, and have chased after first place ever since....Once I started competing I started noticing the other female bodybuilders in the magazines."

She's always regarded women such as Cory Everson, Anja Langer, Lenda Murray and Denise Rutkowski as role models. "If I can ever achieve the types of physiques these ladies had, I would be very Happy !"

Of course Sheila is being modest in these remarks. Many people see her firmly in the big league already.

I asked if she's ever been attracted to power lifting

Sheila: "Not really, but my trainer keeps trying to tempt me into competing in a powerlifting contest ! I am, and have always been, very strong for my size. He thinks I would kick butt in powerlifting, but I like being a bodybuilder."

AND WHAT ABOUT PUTTING ON SOME MORE MUSCLE INCHES ?

Sheila: "I could probably gain a bit more size, but I am content at the size I am. I weigh 175-180 lbs in the offseason, and 145-150 in contest shape, and I feel that is plenty of muscle."

"Now I concentrate on shape and symmetry, as well as definition. If I were to add more size though I would try to increase my back width and thickness, as well as perhaps a bit more in my quad sweep."

She says women are much more active in gyms nowadays, though bodybuilding is not normally the objective. "I get lots of young women approaching me to ask questions about weight training. They are usually very impressed with the amount of work and dedication that I have put into my physique. But I'm not sure I would go so far as to say that more young women are taking up bodybuilding....but they are far more accepting..."

The Clubhouse

The big news here, is we're organising a party! This is a combined Femsport/DtV effort, with Tre doing the actual organising (thanks, Tre). It's called the Femsport Valkyrie Festival. October 1st, Holiday Inn, College Park, MD from 12 noon till 5pm, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if folks then get together after that for a meal, and then maybe a drink or two, and, well, who knows...

Admission $20, $10 for students. Call 240-350-8146 for more info. Here's the poster

The idea is to have a get-together, and at the same time a women's strength contest, so there will be some flexing and posing and strength-related competition. Check out BA's Events message board for more information (and you can also say what sort of things you'd like to see at the Festival).

Sheila Burgess will be there (as one of the judges of the competition).

Jabber maintains his reputation for jabbering, with Gaily and Julia trailing.

On the Message Boards

I've started to change the interface, to make things load faster. And I added a couple more counters, so that instead of just counting the number of posts, you can also see the top ten message boards based on how much they are read. And you can click on the links there, and jump straight to the most popular boards.

Gabrielle Resnick has her own Message Board now. Also Tatianna Butler; her video is available in the Shopping Mall for $30) for Julia the powerlifter, and one for Gaily, heavy lifting, and one for devotees of long fingernails, hostessed by Jazzmon, who has remarkably long fingernails.

The Chess Board stridea forth once more, but apart from that anomaly, Scooby is well ahead in postings. The Politics board is somewhat skewed by some sort of political something-gate. Shanice's activities on the Chess Board give her a slight edge over Jabber, but at least Jabber is jabbering about relevant stuff.

Two new tables.

Mavis is counting the number of times the message list is checked for each board, and the number of times that a posting is read. This gives a very different picture from the one above. The chess board seems to be write-only; it's being posted to, but not read.

One of the big surprises for me, was the number of people checking the TV and Movies board. Eighth in postings, but top in being listed and read. And the stats here, aren't for a full month. About halfway through the month, I did something that might have scared off the Grinch, so that the stats don't keep getting eaten.

Back Page

Following the success of the Fufme web site, I'm delighted to be able to tell you about the iBrator. Available in five vibrant colours, USB-compatible and Y2K compliant.

I checked the site statistics. that Sandra counts up each night.

At the end of August 2000, there were about 268,000 pictures (13 gigabytes), 31 gigabytes of video, 4000 text files (mostly stories) and a total of about 44 gigabytes.

On Vanessa, the Newsthumbs server, there's the NewsThumbs, which is another 7.6 million pictures in 514 gigabytes and 9.8 million text files, a total of 537 gigabytes. And Vanessa is nearly half filled.
