Keys - Part 1 By arcoviontime@gmail.com ----- A biotechnology company was located on one of the islands in the Florida Keys. It had been in business for over a decade, and due to the global financial meltdown, was on the verge of bankruptcy. After a board meeting, it was concluded that they only had enough funds to try one last product. The CEO of the corporation had grown up on a farm in the Midwest, and had planned on taking over the farm after his dad had grown old. His father had been one of the many farmers who had taken out a large loan from the small town bank when interest rates had been at record lows. After a terrible recession, the accountants from the bank came knocking on his door. His father grabbed his shotgun and answered their call with bullets. As expected the local sheriff and his deputies were soon on their way to the farm. The crusty old farmer quickly wrote a farewell note to his son, and rather than spending the rest of his life in a cage, held the gun to his temple and blew his brains out. When his son returned home that night, he saw the wall covered in his father’s blood and brains, and read his farewell note. His father had finished his note by stating that if their cows had been bigger and better at producing milk, things might have turned out differently. The poor farm boy never forgot that final sentence ! He had been an only child, and his mother had died of cancer shortly after his birth. Having always been intelligent, he had done well in school and enrolled at the state’s largest public university. He majored in biochemistry, and graduated with honors. He went on to get his PhD from the same state school, and moved to the Florida Keys and started his company on that island. He chose that location because he loved to surf, and because land was more affordable there than the larger cities in southern Florida. In addition, he liked the island's secluded nature.
