It's a series of stories about girls on a high school boxing team. Girl Boxers By kayoedkid Three girls decided they wanted to try out for the boxing team at Hanson High School. Since the school did not offer boxing to girls, the school board debated whether the girls should be allowed to try out for the boys' team. Although there was the usual discussion about girls competing against boys and if they would get hurt, the two women on the school board argued that the girls would be fighting boys their own size, and they would be more than able to compete. The school board reluctantly agreed. The three girls, Maxine, Ashley and Jill were going to try out for the 110-, 122- and 132-pound spots on the team. All three girls were athletic, and members of the gymnastics and soccer teams, however they knew they needed to learn about boxing. They took boxing lessons at the local YMCA for three weeks before the tryouts were held. The news of the girls competing for spots on the boys team was the buzz of the school for three weeks. All the boys were making snide comments about the girls are going to get killed in the ring. And that they had no business trying to fight with boys. Many girls also said that the girls were stupid for putting themselves in a position where they were likely to get hurt. But then there was a group of girls who approved of the trio of female fighters showing the boys that girls were not the weaker sex. The day of the tryouts was at hand and the gymnasium was packed with spectators wanting to see the so-called battle of the sexes. Boys were carrying signs about how the girls were going to get beat bad. Girls were carrying signs about "Girl Power" and "Girls Rule." The tryouts were to be three round fights refereed and scored by the coach. The winner by points or a knockout would win the spot on the team. The first bout pitted 110-pound Phillip against Jill. At the bell Phil ran to the center of the ring with a round of cheers from his teammates "Go get her," and "give her a beating." He opened up his offense quickly - with jabs and crosses that caught Jill on the head and face. One right cross slammed her cheek, and she went down to one knee. The coach stepped in and gave Jill a standing 8-count. The boys of the team and in the stands all nodded in approval that this knockdown within the first 20-seconds was proof that the girls had no business trying to box the boys. However, everyone was surprised when Jill got to her feet and said she wanted to continue. The first round continued with Phil landing punches on the girl, but he was not able to knock her down again. He won the first round on points. The second round was the same as the first, with Phil jabbing and punching the girl, who was able to take his hits but was not able to mount any offense of her own. Phil won the second round too. Jill realized that she lost both rounds and needed a knockout if she was to win a spot on the team. She admitted that she was too tentative, and she decided that she would come out in Round Three throwing as many punches as she could. She figured even if she was knocked out at least she would get in a few good licks. At the bell, Jill flew to the center of the ring and caught Phil with a jab and right cross that wobbled him. These were the first punches the girl connected in the entire fight and Phil was surprised by their power. He kept himself from stumbling by clinging to the ropes -- but his position enabled Jill to move in and begin throwing punches into his body. The boys on the sideline saw that Phil was in trouble and they shouted for him to get off the ropes. The girls were shrieking with each punch that Jill landed seeing that her offense was beginning to take a toll on the boy. Phil mustered up his last reserve and pushed Jill off of him and into the center of the ring. He was angry and embarrassed that the girl hurt him and had taken him into the third round. He began throwing punches from all angles. Without regard for any defense the boy and the girl were going toe to toe in the middle of the ring punching and raising welts on each other's bodies. The crowd was in a frenzy at the glove leather that was being thrown by both the girl and the boy. Who would give out first??? At the bell, ending the third round, Phil had a black eye and puffed lip and nose. Jill also had a black eye and bruises on her cheek. The coach gave the round to Jill - but it was not enough - and she lost the bout two rounds to one. Phil retained his position on the team. However, the boys who all bragged that the girls were going to get a beating took one look at Phil and saw that his body showed he was in a heck of a fight. They also looked across the ring at Jill, and she too looked battered and bruised, but the boys were surprised she didn't wilt and give in under Phil's offensive barrage. But none-the-less the boys' team was still all boys as Phil won the first mixed-gender bout. The next bout was Maxine against Marco in the 122-pound division. All week long Marco had been bragging about how he was going to demolish the girl that stepped into the ring with him. He flexed his muscles and boasted that no girl would be able to stand up to his power. Maxine recognized that Jill made the mistake of being too tentative at the beginning of the fight and she promised herself that she would not make that mistake. At the bell both Maxine and Marco flew into the center of the ring throwing punches. Maxine caught Marco with a jab to his forehead and a right cross to his cheek. Marco, who was surprised by the girl's attack, returned fire with a jab and cross of his own. Both connected - and he smiled thinking they should be enough to take the fight out of his female opponent. But when Maxine countered with a body punch and jab to Marco's forehead - it was her time to smile. "Didn't think I would be able to take a punch," she asked Marco, who looked surprised that the girl was still standing. Maxine followed up with a punch that caught Marco in the stomach and made him double over bringing his head down to Maxine's belt level. She delivered a hammer of a right cross that dropped the boy to the floor. The boys on the sideline were open-mouthed in disbelief after all the trash talking from Marco during the week, they never expected him to be the one knocked down. The girls in the stands were screaming their support to their female representative. "Beat him good. Show him some Girl Power." "Where's that beating I was going to get," Maxine taunted as she threw her hands into the air and went to a neutral corner. The girls in the stands continued chanting "finish him. He's ready to go." Marco got to his feet at the count of eight. He was woozy but angry that the girl knocked him down in the first round. As Maxine moved in to launch another round of punches the bell sounded. She felt good that she took some of the boy's punches -- they didn't hurt, and she proved she could knock him down -- winning the first round. Marco sat in his corner waiting for the bell for Round Two anxious to get back at the girl and show everyone that the first round was a fluke and a lucky punch. At the sound of the bell, he ran into the center of the ring ready to wail on Maxine. She too ran from her corner anxious to finish what she started and not wanting the boy to regain his strength. As Marco began to taunt that the girl got lucky in the first round, Maxine delivered a right cross that turned the boy's head. He nearly fell - but he grabbed the ropes for balance. "I thought you'd be tougher than this," Maxine whispered as she moved in to deliver another three jabs to the boy's mid-section. "All that trash talking this week, and look who's getting the beating," she taunted. Marco's teammates shouted for him to get off the ropes and counter punch. But the girl wouldn't let him slide by. She kept up her offensive barrage, up and down on Marco's head and body. The boy realized he was getting pummeled. He managed a weak smile to his teammates as if to say he's okay and still able to take the girl, but anyone watching this fight had to doubt if he had anything left. Marco was able to deliver a jab to Maxine's head and a right cross to her shoulder. She smiled "If that's the best you can do -- you're not getting out of this round." And with that she unleashed a flurry of punches that began to punish the boy. "So much for your muscles," she laughed as she began a real beat down on the boy. Punches were coming from everywhere. And Marco had to know they were coming from Maxine, because she was the only person in the ring with him. But how could that be. He still couldn't come to grips that he was getting battered by a girl. She shouldn't be able to hit that hard. And certainly, she shouldn't be able to cause him the pain that he's experiencing. As Marco pondered the differences in the sexes, another punch ripped into his stomach doubling him over. The boys on the sideline were open-mouthed watching their representative getting demolished. The girls were shrieking with encouragement with every punch that softened the once proud male frame of muscles and condescension that entered the ring five minutes ago. Maxine followed her gut punch with a right cross to Marco's face that spun him around. As her glove connected, she felt an exhilarating flow come over her knowing that she was beating a boy, who thought he was stronger than she. As each of her punches chiseled away at his self-perceived invincibility she smiled "You're not as tough as you think you are, Marco." Marco heard her words -- which stung as much as the punches. How can this be happening he thought? I've beaten dozens of guys in the ring -- and even when I lost, I've never gotten such a beating. His mind was screaming for him to fight back - but the last assault by the girl - took everything out of him. His mind was demanding that his macho step it up, but the pain centers in his brain prevented his arms and legs from responding. Maxine saw the glassy eyes of her opponent and knew it was just a matter of seconds before she would have him collapsing at her feet. She launched into an offensive flurry that caught Marco on his chin, face, and forehead. With each punch the girls on the side shouted, "He's going down, He's going down." The boys wouldn't believe it, until Maxine delivered an uppercut that sent Marco against the ropes and bouncing back into the center of the ring where he collapsed. The referee didn't have to count. It was obvious the boy was out. Maxine threw her hands up in victory - knowing she just defeated a boy who was two years older than she -- and had been boxing for four years. The girls in the stands all cheered knowing that they had a representative on the boxing team. The third and final match pitted Ashley against Bill in the 132-pound division. Both were 5-foot-5 but Bill had a muscular body that was chiseled from hours in the weight room. Ashley on the other hand was shapely and had a great body built from soccer and gymnastics. Although both were the same height, the body difference was obvious. Bill had a broad chest and arms that showed a great definition of biceps and triceps. Ashley did not have any clear definition of muscle under her feminine frame - but her legs and hips connected with a narrow waist and then a muscular back. Bill felt that he had to make amends for the beating that his teammate, Marco, just received, so he was thinking "no mercy," as he stepped to the center of the ring to meet his female opponent. Ashley was encouraged that Maxine won her bout which gave her a confidence that the boys were not invincible, and they could be beaten. The boys in the stands were still in shock from the previous fight, watching Marco - who had been fighting for years - get taken apart by Maxine - who only had three weeks of boxing lessons. But they were sure that Bill - who was 20-and-5 over his career and never been knocked down would - have no trouble with his female opponent. At the bell, Bill went into his usual offense of bulling his way in throwing punches. He knew he could take a punch and felt even more confident that he could definitely take a punch from a girl - so he didn't believe he had much to worry about. Ashley was caught by surprise by the boy's attack, and she was hit on the cheek that wobbled her into the ropes. Bill followed up with body shots and punches into her arms and shoulders that were making her drop her gloves. The girls were screaming for Ashley to get off the ropes, but the boy had her pinned. She knew that her body was not able to take much more of the pounding so she dropped to one knee - figuring that the standing eight count would give her a few seconds rest and get the boy off of her. She then told the coach she was ready to continue as she squared off in the center of the ring. Bill pressed his assault. But Ashley changed her tactics and rather than going toe-to-toe with the boy, she began to use her speed and stick and move. Her jabs and crosses were easily blocked and swatted away by Bill, but he was unable to hit her. The first round ended -- with the score keepers giving it to the boy. Bill smiled at his female opponent across the ring waiting for the bell for Round Two. He knew it was just a matter of time before he caught her with the one punch that would put her away, as it had put away so many other fighters in his three-year career. The Ashley's corner told her to continue to stick and move stay out of the boy's power range. She felt her body beginning to get a second wind and recover from the pounding of the first round. At the bell Bill jumped out quickly, looking to cut off the ring and corner the girl - for another beating. However, Ashley was able to side-step and throw out a few jabs. None of them connected. But Bill continued to launch haymaker after haymaker at the girl - who was able to keep away. He was chasing her around the ring, barely connecting with one or two punches. But Ashley did not connect with anything. The scoring gave this round also to the boy. Ashley went back to her corner wondering how she was going to win this fight. She needed a knock-out and she had yet to hit Bill with anything. It was then her corner people told her that whenever Bill gets ready to unload a haymaker or big right cross, he drops his left hand to his belt. They said she should have a clear shot with a right cross of her own. But she would have to step in and let the boy's punch hit her shoulder so she would be close enough to connect with her own punch. The bell sounded and Bill again wanted to end this with a knockout. Although he was winning, he was upset that the girl was still standing, and he felt he should have knocked her out. He stepped in a uncorked a right cross. Ashley saw his left-hand drop, and she stepped in and delivered a right cross of her own. Bill's punch hit her shoulder, but her punch hit Bill flush on the cheek, spinning his head. He wobbled and caught himself. He looked at the girl in disbelief that she was the one who delivered the blow. He again moved in to deliver a haymaker that had damage written all over it. Again, Ashley stepped in -- took the punch on her shoulder and let fly with a right cross of her own. She again connected squarely on the boy's head - again Bill was wobbled, but he didn't go down. Ashley saw the look of surprise in the boy's face. She moved in closer almost daring him to throw another right cross -- he took the bait and she countered with a punch of her own. The boys on the sideline saw Bill begin to stumble and grab the ropes. The three punches by the girl, left him glassy eyed and unsteady. Ashley recognized that she had the boy hurt and she again stepped in close. Bill's punch into her shoulder had no pop, and it didn't hurt. Ashley smiled "If that's all you have left stud, you're going down." Bill couldn't believe the girl was taunting him and he angrily moved in to deliver an assault that would shut her up. But the girl was able to meet him head on this time and jabbed three times into his face and head. She followed with a haymaker of her own that had Bill coiled against the ropes. The girls in the stands were screaming for Ashley to finish the boy -- there was one minute left in the round, and she needed a knockout. Bill tried to fend off the girl's assault, but the three rockets he took to the head at the beginning of the round left him woozy. He had to simply hang on in this round and he would win the bout two rounds to one. If he were fighting a boy, he probably would have taken a knee to give himself an eight-count to clear his head and rest. But he was fighting a girl, and his male ego would not admit that it was a girl who would be the first to have him drop to a knee. Bill still believed that he had enough in the tank to take out the female warrior in front of him. He pushed Ashley back into the center of the ring and began to mount an assault. However, Ashley kept watching his left arm drop and when it did, she delivered a right cross that left the boy unsteady. "So girls don't belong in the ring with boys," she jeered, while throwing a continuing barrage of punches that were connecting with a devastating regularity on the boy's body and head. It was obvious to all that the girl was winning the battle in the center of the ring, but did she have enough power to knock out the boy, who was now just standing and teetering before her. Chants of "He's going down, He's going down," came from the girl's side of the gymnasium. The boys were silent - and hoping their representative could hang on for another 20 seconds. Ashley then delivered two jabs and three crosses that rocked Bill, who looked at the girl and managed a weak smile. He felt his legs going out from under him, and he collapsed in the center of the ring. Ashley threw her hands in the air, "Yes" she cried out. The referee stepped in to begin the count. Bill only had to get to his feet and say he wanted to continue - and although he would have lost the round, he would have won the fight. His teammates were shouting "Get Up, Get Up." Bill heard them and knew he was in a position that was very strange to him. He never was knocked down before. At the count of five he got to his knees. Six-seven-eight- and he was on one foot. As he tried to stand on the other foot before the ref hit Ten, he fell back on the canvas. The girl's assault took everything out of him. He was down. The girls won two of the three spots on the team - both by knockouts. The boys had to come to grips that the girls were able to compete against them. It was a question though, of how they would do against other male fighters from the other schools.
