The Roommate - Part 1


John was a 20 year old college student who had just finished his sophomore year
at a private liberal arts college in Maine. He had been living in a two bedroom
apartment for a year now, and his roommate had just graduated. He put an ad in
the school paper, and left his phone number and email address. Given the summer
was just beginning and most of the students were away, he knew that there would
be fewer people looking for a place.
He got a few phone calls and some emails, but nothing came of it. After a while,
he got an email that said : ###Dear John, I came across your ad looking for a
roommate. I am out of town right now, but I will be back in a few weeks. If you
can email me some pictures of the place, I can better decide if it is suitable
for me. Regards, Chris.### John took some pictures, and emailed them to Chris.
After a week, he got a reply that said : ###Dear John, if the apartment is still
available, I would like to rent it. I plan on being back by mid-July. Regards,
Chris.### At this point John wasn###t sure what to do. He didn###t feel comfortable
renting to someone without seeing them first, or at least talking to them over
the phone. On the other hand, not too many people had answered his ad, and he
didn###t want to lose a potential roommate.
After some thought he emailed Chris Anderson back and said : ###Dear Chris, can we
talk over the phone first ? Regards, John. A few days passed, and he got an
email from Chris that said : ###Dear John, I currently have a terrible case of
laryngitis, and I can###t speak over the phone. The doctor has said that I will be
better in about two weeks. I understand the difficulty of deciding without at
least talking to me first. So, I have the following proposal : I will stop by in
two weeks time. If the place is still available, you can decide then. Regards,
Chris.###
To John, this seemed like a very reasonable idea, as he had nothing to lose. He
emailed Chris back and said : ###Ok Chris, it sounds like a plan. Why don###t you
stop by on July 15th at around noon. Regards, John.### John got a positive reply
back from Chris the following day, and the days passed without anyone else
inquiring about the apartment. So on July 15th, at around noon, there was a
knock on the door of the apartment. John answered the door, knowing it was
Chris.
The image that greeted John when he opened the door were a pair of perfectly
shaped breasts directly at his eye level. John looked upwards and made eye
contact with an angelic face. Time seemed to stand still as John was at a loss
for words. The silence was finally broken when he heard the most feminine of
voices say : ###Hello ! You must be John. I am Chris. ### John finally snapped out
of it. Finding the situation somewhat awkward, he took a few steps back. John
saw that Chris had extended her hand out for a handshake. John reciprocated, and
his hand seemed to disappear in the much larger and softer hand of Chris. Chris
shook john###s hand as softly as possible, and John offered Chris to come in.
Sensing that John was still at a loss for words, Chris asked that if the place
was still available. John answered that it was, and gave her a quick tour. Chris
found the place to be perfect, as there was a large room with its own bathroom
and shower, and it was separated from John###s room by the living room. The place
also had central heat and air, was within walking distance of campus, was fairly
new, and even had its own gym and swimming pool. The rent was also very
reasonable. In effect, the only thing that would be shared would be the kitchen
and living room.
Looking down into John###s eyes excitedly, Chris said : ###Oh John ! I love this
place, it would be perfect for me !### John wasn###t sure what to say. He had never
lived with a girl before, and he had always been very shy around girls. All he
could say in response was : ###L-Listen Chris, you seem like a great person,
th-there is just one small problem. I didn###t know that you were a girl !### This
time, Chris paused a little, before she finally replied : ###Oh ! That###s because
of my name, right ? I see !! Chris can be both a girl###s and a guy###s name ! But
what###s the big deal ? I mean, is that really a problem for you, in this day and
age ?### John was at a loss for words, and didn###t know what to say. Sensing his
discomfort, Chris finally said : ###Tell you what John, I###ll give you my cell
phone number. I###ll give you two weeks to make up your mind. If you change your
mind let me know. Until then I###ll stay with a friend. If you change your mind,
that will be wonderful, and if not, don###t worry as I###ll try and find another
place to live !###
And with those words, Chris smiled at John, and said her goodbye. Chris### mere
presence had really effected John, and he decided not to think about her
proposal for the rest of that day. The next week went by, with no one else
inquiring about the place. John was now beginning to get a little nervous, but
he told himself that there was still a week left. Unfortunately another week
passed by, and still nothing. John finally realized that if he was going to have
a roommate, it would have to be Chris. Given that John was a mathematics major,
he had always approached things logically. He decided to do a cost-benefit
analysis in his head. He went through all the pros and cons. He thought about
what Chris had said, and it certainly no longer seemed odd for a guy and girl to
live together. Besides, each would have his or her own room, bathroom and
shower, and there was even a living room separating them. Also, he could save
money by having a roommate.
So, finally on August first, John made up his mind and called Chris and told her
that he had decided affirmatively. Chris enthusiastically replied that she would
move in the following day. Once their conversation was over, and John had hung
up the phone, he waited somewhat anxiously for his new roommate to move in the
following day.
