The unofficial start of Sumo as we know it by India-guy All characters and the script are purely fictional Sometime, during the late 19th Century, the West and particularly the United States was trying hard to gain a foothold in Japan and gain influence over the Japanese. But they encountered stiff resistance. The Emperor, though revered, was dependent on the services of a network of feudal warlords who were the Samurai warriors. They were known for their fanatical loyalty to the clan of the emperor, their tremendous courage in war and in the face of adversity, their military capabilities etc. They were highly conservative and their loyalty to the emperor was more than personal. They considered the office of the emperor as sacred and possibly would have risen against the emperor if they believed that he was committing any act that violated the sanctity of the office. They were very highly conservative and strongly resisted any attempts at any change in the system. The Emperor was more modern in outlook and was willing to accept changes to the system if they were beneficial. But he dared not act against the wishes of the Samurai. Thus there was a stalemate between the Americans and the Samurai as regards their influence over the Emperor. Wishing to avoid bloodshed, one of the members of the American contingent suggested an idea to the Japanese Contingent. “If the best martial artists from both the sides could meet each other, we could let the outcome decide which way of life would influence the Japanese” The Japanese court, both the Samurai and the Emperor felt it was a good idea. One of the Samurai patronized a Sumo Wrestler who was known to be the best martial artist in the whole of Japan. He was said to be unvanquished. He had actually killed many opponents. Now, ancient Sumo was a far more violent affair than it is now. Punches (including backhanded), kicks, twists, strangling etc were all allowed. The Samurai proudly summoned his fighter who came forward and bowed smartly. The Sumo fighter could barely hide his eagerness to see who his opponent would be. They were stunned to see a beautiful, voluptuous woman over 6 feet tall come forward. She had reddish blond hair with long tresses. She looked between 35 to 40 years of age. The Sumo fighter was initially angry and thought the Americans were playing a practical joke on him. But the woman (who she said was called Belle) said that if she lost, she would place herself and her son under Japanese tutelage and be in bondage and a slave to the samurai and sumo fighter. Belle had had a chequered career. She had seen life’s ups and downs. She had been a member of the oldest profession, had been a spy in the civil war, had spent time learning the ropes as a gymnast and as a circus acrobat and had also started doing shows where she fought as a wrestler and street fighter with both male and female opponents. She had had many adventures and lived life to the full, had many affairs and bore a son. The sumo fighter (Sumo for short) on the other hand had led a very sheltered life. But he had not lost in any fight so far and all fighters stood in awe of him. The opponents got into the ring. She now stripped to reveal herself in a leotard. The sumo fighter, on the other hand, was dressed formally and wore traditional fighting attire. He was shocked and abused her with what little English he knew about her indecent and vulgar behavior which he said belonged to the whorehouse. She just had a ghost of a smile playing on her lips. He had the advantages of both height and weight though she was very large too. Sumo initially thought he could finish her off easily and hence started playing with her. He lifted her with one hand and stared throwing and catching her as he did not want to seriously injure her. She was furious at this indignity but she forced herself to remain calm and used her training as an acrobat to suddenly maneuver herself to kick him and land on her feet. He was shocked and wild with rage. He punched her in the face and on her breast in a flurry of blows. She started bleeding profusely from her face. She decided that she had to use her legs and agility as her main weapons. She suddenly lay down and swiftly brought her legs together in a twisting scissoring moment. He was thrown off balance and fell to the floor. She used this opportunity to use her legs and arms to trap his body in painful holds. By now, her eyes were swollen and black. But she was getting more confident. She realized that his threshold for pain was low. The fight went on in this fashion and was quite even. She had now learnt to counter all his blows. At one point, when she side stepped him, he lost balance and in a move that was a precursor to what was to become ju-jitsu, she suddenly used his momentum to throw him. She was elated. He looked crestfallen. She suddenly realized that this was the moment and from the vantage point of the ropes, leapt on to his head and started hitting him and pulling out his hair by the roots. He staggered like that had been blinded. It looked like the fight had almost gone out of him. He fell to the ground with a thud. She would have felt sorry for him under other circumstances but business was business. With an effort of will, she picked him up and walked around the ring. All those present were stunned. Suddenly, she smiled. She remembered his comments about her dress. She ripped off his clothes, stripped him naked, got the robe that she had been wearing beforehand and tied it around his head like a baseball or a headdress. She then lifted him up and walked around the arena with a jaunt. She felt he did not deserve even the indignity of wearing her leotard !! sumo, who was now almost bald, was shattered and tears streamed out of his eyes. The sympathies of the audience, including the Japanese, by now, were with the woman and everyone, including the samurai found the sight very funny and ridiculous. But she, on the other hand, was soft hearted but felt that like the david and goliath story, she had to destroy his fighting spirit to strengthen what she knew was noble in him. She had not finished with him. She then removed the cloth from his head and diapered him with it. Still in full view, she went to her room and got her tattooing kit. There was a beseeching look in his eyes. For the next couple of hours, she methodically carved her name on every part of his torso. She then took him to the circus almost painted as a clown and along with her fellow acrobats (who had come from the US), she practiced an event where she used to perform the trapeze act with a ball between her legs transferring the ball to a fellow acrobat with her legs before making contact with another acrobat with her hands. It was a very delicate maneuver. This time, Sumo was the ball. He was terrified but she held him very firmly between her very strong legs. People watched wonderstruck. At last, when the whole event was over, she took the applause with a glow on her face. She found that he had emptied his bladder both out of fear and the pressure she had applied. He now had to bear the final indignity of her changing him. After changing his diapers, she decided that sumo would be a funny, gentle game where the sumo fighters would be dressed like sumo fighters are dressed in the current age. She told another Sumo fighter to strip and dressed him up similarly and made them fight for the pleasure of the crowd in the way with which we are all familiar. At the end of the fight, he suddenly went running to his room and wore something and then quickly climbed up to the top of the steep tower of the building overcoming his fear of heights. Shocked, she followed him to the top of the building with the intention of talking to him and comforting him. But she screamed with shock as he had just jumped over the edge as she neared. She was astounded as he seemed to suddenly sprout wings and seemed to glide away from them forever. In his fall, he seemed to recover the grace that was innate but had eluded him for a long time. Tears were streaming down her cheeks from a mixture of relief, sorrow, pity. She became the bodyguard of the Samurai warlord (and tried to imbibe all that was good in Japanese culture and propagate it to the world. She also learnt the best tricks of poor Sumo). .
