I found this on the web and thought it might be interesting. by OldDave000@aol.com On the high school wrestling team 3 years ago I had to wrestle a girl. I thought it would be a joke, because she was a girl (weak) and I was a guy (strong). I had never even heard of girls wrestling. I was a junior, Julie was a sophomore and I easily outweighed her. She was thin and tall and wore a tight blue singlet with white sox up to her knees. Her hair was bunched up inside her specially designed head gear and she had far too pretty of a face to be a wrestler, I thought she looked more like a cheerleader or an aerobics dancer. She looked weak next to me, I thought I had better not be too rough with her, or she could get hurt. The ref blew his whistle and match started. After some initial stalling, I tried to take her down and end it quickly, but she broke free of my hold. I tried again, but she countered and tripped me up, sending me to the mat for a takedown. I was so surprised that she was able to do this, before I could even react she was on top of me... but I managed to get out of bounds. We came back to the center circle and I looked up at the scoreboard, I was shocked to see that I was losing 4-0. I could not believe it. It happened so fast and this girl was stronger than she looked. I decided not to take it easy on this opponent. Now she had the advantage, I tried to escape but she would not let me go. She had her arms wrapped around my waist, and I could do nothing. The whistle blew and we started face to face again. This time she went for my legs, but I back peddled and grabbed her arms. She escaped and once again out muscled me despite the size difference. There was nothing I could do. Julie flipped me onto my back in the middle of the circle, the crowd cheered. Now she had a huge lead and things were getting desperate. My palms were sweating and my heart was pounding fast. I could not stand the thought of losing to a girl. There was no way it could happen, guys are supposed to be stronger than girls, everyone knows that. I tried to get up, but she pushed me back down. Julie's coach yelled some instructions to her, and I could faintly hear my teammates yelling "don't let her beat you." Now she had grabbed my right leg under the knee and pulled it over my head as her other arm reached behind by neck, then she clasped her hands together, interlocking her fingers to tighten the hold. She had me in a cradle, I couldn't believe it. I was flailing to get free, struggling and kicking my loose leg as hard as I could but no use as she pressed my shoulders down to the padding below. The ref looked at this in disbelief and checked for space under my back, but there wasn't any and he slapped the mat with his hand to signal the pin. I was so humiliated as my parents and girlfriend watched on in embarrassment. I wanted to be anywhere in the world outside of that gym, I could hardly bring myself to get up and shake her hand. She said "good match" to me as we embraced, and I just wanted to hide. She wasn't even breathing hard as she took off her head gear and her long blond hair tied in a pony tail fell out while I limped over to the bench for an ice pack. Her teammates high fived her, mine couldn't even look at me. I had a new respect for female athletes from then on. The worst part was a photo of Julie pinning me ended up in the local paper the next week for all to see. I sure took a lot of crap from my friends for losing to the "weaker sex", but I tell them she probably would have beat you too. I wrestled Julie again at our section meet and she came back from a 4 point deficit to beat me in the final period. Luckily for me, the next year I moved up one weight class so I did not have to wrestle her again. For those that don't believe girls can out wrestle guys, trust me it happens all the time. This girl was just as tough as any male wrestler I have ever faced. What she lacked in brute strength and skill, she made up for in speed, endurance, and agility. It was impossible for me to pin her since she was so flexible, she could easily get out of any move I used on her. Plus she had stronger hips and legs. DO NOT underestimate girl wrestlers; take it from someone who knows.
