Lost Valkyrie, part one.
______ Heidi decided to take her break before she and Colleen began the evening cleaning. She found herself stuck in a fastfood job working the graveyard shift with a woman who used rank to insure that Heidi did most of the dirty work. It was two-thirty in the morning, the customer traffic had dwindled to nothing, and Heidi had three hours of grease, heat, and shit to look forward to.______Heidi was standing behind the main counter by the cash register when Colleen called out from in back, "Take your break, blondie. After we get started, I don't want anything to mess up the workflow until we're finished." The blonde frowned inside, knowing that when Colleen use the phrase 'work flow', she would be doing even more of the work than usual and Colleen would enjoy watching her do it. ______She was about to get some coffee and go sit down in the dimly lit dining area when a vehicle pulled into the parking lot. One of those nice Mercedes Benz SUVs. It parked. Someone got out and moved towards the customer entrance in a leasurely manner. A woman in what appeared to be a full-length fur coat and mirrored shades. Heidi thought, "Shades? Who in the hell wears shades in the middle of the night?" ______The woman entered from the cool night and approached the counter with a walk that was sensual and confident. She stood directly across from Heidi and gazed up at the menu display that was above the pretty but tired looking blonde woman's head. She studied it in silence, and Heidi studied her. ______Heidi was awed. Even though she couldn't see the woman's eyes, she could tell that the customer was exceptionally beautiful. Everything from her long, rich dark hair and sensually erotic mouth to her flawless mediterranean skin and perfectly sculpted head came together to form a powerful image. And the woman seemed to radiate something that seemed to both intimidate and seduce at the same time. ______The woman spoke: "I would like a deluxe cheeseburger, large onion rings, and a small coffee." Her voice was quiet, deep, and had a mysterious quality to it. She looked at Heidi and smiled only slightly. The blonde rang up the order and asked, "Here or to go?" The brunette replied, "Here." ______"That will be seven twenty two, please," Heidi said. The woman handed her a one hundred dollar bill, and told her to keep the change, then turned to go sit down in the dining area. The blonde quickly said, "Mam, I can't make change for this. Not enough cash in the drawer." The brunette returned and handed Heidi a ten-dollar bill. The blonde handed her the change for the ten and gave her back the hundred. The woman smiled slightly, handed the hundred back to the blonde, and said, "Keep it." ______When the order was ready, Heidi placed it on a tray and decided to take it to the woman rather than call her to the counter. She backed through the employee-only door and approached the darkest corner of the dining area where the customer was sitting. The woman had removed her gloves but still had on the coat and shades. The blonde placed the tray in front of her, smiled, then turned to go when the mysterious brunette asked, "Have you taken your break yet, Heidi?" ______At first the blonde was surprized that the woman knew her name, but then remembered that she had a nametag on. She instinctively reached towards her breast to check that it was there, because whenever she forgot it, Colleen bitched all night about it. The nametag, though, was concealed by the full-length apron Heidi had put on just before the woman had walked in. The brunette explained, "Yes, I know who you are. That's the main reason I'm here. The food was just an excuse to give you a decent tip." The woman spoke with a smile in her voice, but her expression was sincere. "I also know that this is about your usual break time, you're wondering what I'm up to, and now your guard is up." The woman extended her hand to Heidi and said, "My name is Veronica, by the way. I'm a friend of Joan Abbott, who told me about your experience with someone by the name of Tabrins." ______Heidi shook the woman's gloved hand. She was surprized to find Veronica's hand warm and gentle. She hesitated for a second, reminded of her previous life before she had ended up in this small town doing this crappy job. The blonde's guard was up to be sure, but there was something about this inigmatic woman that compelled her to agree to the invitation. "Let me get a cup of coffee first," she said with a neutral expression. ______As she prepared a cup for herself, she though about the man named Tabrins and about how he had tried to help her. He had helped her lose the horrible feeling that had been growing inside of her for years, but since that meeting between her and him at Joan's house, she had slowly started to fade away. Now, four months later, she was a shadow of her former self, existing only to work, sleep, and drift from one day to the next. ______Heidi returned and sat across from the woman, who spoke as she ate. "I'm here because I need you help with a problem," she explained. "I have a friend I've known for years who has an adopted daughter who has a problem like the one you had when you ran into Tabrins. I can help her, but I need you there to provide what I can't; a kindred spirit. In turn, you'll be helped. If I'm right, the two of you will be the key to solving each other's delema." ______The blonde was suddenly filled with apprehension. She didn't like the idea of anyone knowing about her 'problem', let alone a stranger. She decided to probe. "And what problem would that be?" she asked, knowing somehow that this woman was telling the truth. Veronica finished the last bite of her hamburger and in a clinical manner explained, "Your inability to ingage in an aggressive act of violence against an opponent, no matter how much you desire to. Your dedication to learning and perfecting your abilities at several forms of fighting, particularly in the area of martial arts, as a way of overcoming the thing that has been bothering you for years. The better you get at being capable of doing what you can't bring yourself to do, the worse those strange feeling get." ______Heidi looked down at her cup of coffee. "How do you know this?" she asked. ______Veronica explained, "When you arrived at Joan's house that day to meet with Tabrins you briefly met her. Later that evening she asked Tabrins who you were and what you were doing there. He told her what he knew of you, and that he had tried to help you. Joan is now staying with this friend of mine and her daughter, and she was reminded of you by this young woman's problem. When I got up there to see what I could do, Joan spoke of you. And so here I am." ______Break time was coming to an end, and Heidi's curiosity, coupled with strong misgivings and a sudden desire not to have to go back to work, made her blunt: "What exactly do you want from me and what can I expect from you?" She was surprized by her own candidness. A bit of the old Heidi had returned. ______The blonde could feel the brunette's concealed eyes locking on to hers as she answered. Veronica stated, "I want you to come with me up to Canada where these people are and help me help this friend's daughter, help yourself in the process, and then return to Houston. You'll go to work for a friend of mine who has a job waiting for you that pays more than twice the money that idiot you have to take orders from now is making. Oh, and I'll throw in a few thousand bucks to cover your travel expenses for the week we'll be gone, even though I'm going to be paying for everything anyway." ______Heidi knew the woman could see indecision and fear in her face. As she moved to get up and go back to work, the brunette said, "Heidi, if you stay here you'll die. Tabrins didn't help you; he turned you into a zombie. Remember who you once were, and what and where you are now." ______The tension was broken by the sound of someone clearing their throat to show that they were annoyed. Heidi looked over towards the main counter to see Colleen looking at her. She said as she rose to return to work, "I'll need some time to think about it. Give me your phone number and I'll call you." The woman responded, "I'll give it to you before I leave. You should get back to work now; your boss is pissed. I'm going to sit here for a while, finish my coffee, and relax a bit." ______Heidi went back behind the counter and Colleen was waiting. "Friend of your's?" she asked, sarcasm in her voice. The blonde answered, "She gave a a nice tip, and asked me to join her when I went to take my break. Yes, I suppose she's a kind of friend." Heidi was in no mood for any of Colleen's crap after her talk with the woman who called herself Veronica. She said, "I thought I'd start on the grill first tonight and get it over with." Collen grunted and Heidi stepped around her to get to the hot grill. Cleaning the damn thing would put both Colleen and Veronica out of her mind. ______Out of the corner of her eye Heidi could see Colleen watching her and looking at all the stuff the blonde was going to have to clean. The grill, the friers, the heaters and warmers, the sundae machine; anything and everthing that was greasy, dirty, or messy. Colleen would do the restocking, a little vacuuming, and piddle with some paperwork. Beyond Colleen, sitting in the dim dining area, the blonde could see the silloette of the other woman, and realized the strong contrast between the two women. They were as different as night and day in so many ways. She returned to the task at hand, not knowing what the hell to do. She felt anger rising in her, like her 'old' self. ______She was almost done with the surface of the grill. She knew Colleen was still standing there, watching her work. She pretended not to notice. Colleen's back was to the counter and the register. Heidi was sideways to the counter, and appreciated the fact that her boss had positioned herself so that the blonde would be aware of her presence. ______A voice seemed to come out of nowhere. A woman's voice that was quiet, deep, and had a mysterious quality to it. The voice said, "I would like some more onion rings, please." ______Colleen turned around and Heidi looked up to see the brunette standing at the counter with a smile on her face and her purse in hand. Even though she was almost directly in front of Colleen, Veronica was looking in the blonde's direction. "That is, if you don't mind, Heidi. You make such good rings." ______Colleen asked, "Will that be all?" There was an edge in the large woman's voice. The beautiful brunette replied, "Another coffee also, please." Colleen took the cash and returned the other woman's change, saying, "It'll be a few minutes. Have a seat." Veronica smiled warmly at the two women then returned to her dark perch. ______Heidi began to move towards the freezer for the onion rings when her boss said, "Get back to work. I'll get the order." As Colleen walked by, the blonde heard her boss mumble, "Is that ritch bitch gonna be here all night?" Colleen started the rings frying, her back once again turned towards the main counter. Heidi was just finishing the grill when a voice seemed to come out of nowhere. A voice that was strong, deep, and had a dangerous quality to it. The voice said, "I thought I made it clear that I wanted Heidi to make those onion rings!" ______Both Colleen and Heidi turned around, startled. Veronica stood several feet back from her side of the main counter, and looked very different. She had removed her shades and coat, and had her hands on her hips. She moved towards the counter into the light to reveal the sight of an almost overwhelming vision. ______The brunette was wearing a perfectly form-fitting dress of impeccable design. It was sleeveless, the hem ending four inches above her knees. It did nothing to conceal the incredible body the woman possessed. As Veronica walked forward her body undulated with a sexuality that Heidi had never a imagined a woman's walk could illustrate. The brunette placed her fisted hands on the counter and stared at Colleen. The blonde had guessed right. Veronica's eyes were as beautiful as the rest of her, and their safire blue shined with a startling intensity even in the off lighting of the restaurant. ______"Oh shit!" Heidi thought. "What is she doing?" ______Colleen's face darkened and she said in a low tone of voice, "Heidi has a lot of work to do. She's already behind schedule. Your onion rings will be ready in a minute, mam." ______Veronica looked at Heidi, then stepped back from the counter as if to return to her table. Colleen turned back to the frier, thinking the woman had been put in her place. ______What Heidi saw next prevented her from returning to cleaning. Veronica crowched a bit, and in one smooth motion hopped over the counter effertlessly and landed about two feet directly behind Colleen without making much more sound than that of a pin dropping. The sound was just enough to cause the larger woman to turn around and look. ______For an instant, Colleen looked surprized, then she became visibly angry. "If you don't return to the customer area immediately, I'm going to have to ask you to leave this property!" The brunette, facing the larger woman directly, crossed her arms under her impossible-not-to-look-at bust and said, "Heidi, I'm waiting for my onion rings." ______Veronica then turned her beautiful head to face Heidi, and Colleen did also. The blonde realized what the brunette was doing. Heidi looked at Colleen, then Veronica, then back at Colleen. For an instant, she seemed to be able to recall everything Colleen had done to her over the months. Something in her made her say, "I can make the rings and still get all of my work done." ______Colleen glared at the blonde, letting her know what kind of hell she was going to be in for when the two of them were alone again. Veronica said, "Thank you, Heidi." ______Colleen faced the brunette, so angry she was shaking. She yelled, "Leave this property now!" Veronica's eyes narrowed, but she didn't move. ______Heidi watched Colleen, at least four inches taller and forty pounds heavier then her opponent, tense. She knew that if the larger woman got angry enough, she would get physical. She had done it before with both customers and co-workers. ______Colleen tried to raise her right arm to draw back to throw a punch. Before her arm had a chance to begin any real motion for that purpose, the brunette's right arm moved so fast that Heidi almost couldn't see it. The larger woman's head snapped back and to the side from the slap she received. The blonde would later wonder how the larger woman's neck hadn't been broken. ______Colleen staggered back against the fryer and it's burned onion rings. She managed to catch heself before she fell, struggling to hold on to consciouness. She looked at the brunette. The other woman had crossed her arms under her bust again, and just looked back at her. Both Colleen and Heidi realized the same thing at the same time: Colleen's life was in danger. ______Veronica's intrancing eyes seemed to have strange highlights in them. Still looking at the larger woman, she spoke in voice that was strong, bottomless, and had a malevolent quality to it: "Heidi, I'm leaving now." The beautiful woman's head turned towards the blonde, the expression on her face now tranquil and soft. In a voice that was quiet, deep, and mysterious, she asked, "Well?" ______Heidi looked at the woman who had reminded her of what she had once been and might be, and then looked at the other woman who had never been. She smiled at the brunette and asked, "Could you give me a ride home? I don't think I have a job here anymore." ______"Sure," answered Veronica. "I'll wait for you in the Mercedes." As Heidi got her jacket and pocket book, she heard the brunette say, "It was nice meeting you, Colleen." As Heidi headed for the door, the blonde's former boss was still standing by the frier, watching the dark beauty walk out to her vehicle. Heidi neither looked at Colleen nor spoke to her. ______ One hour later two women in a black Mercedes SUV head up the interstate towards Canada. One is blonde, the other brunette. The blonde reclines in her passenger seat to get some rest for the long journey ahead. As she dozes off, she dreams an unspoken question: "What are you, lady? Witch, sorceress, goddess, or angel?" Then she sleeps.______The other drives on tirelessly. She is neither witch nor sorceress nor goddess, and she certainly is no angel. ______She is a succubus. |
